My goal is to have my own business. Currently I'm employed and working away. I'd like to stay like that and set up a small business and if it takes off then I'll look at quitting the day job.

I want to be legal and to charge and pay taxes. Can anybody recommend any good books or sites to start me off on this please.

First determine how much available finance you will have to begin your small business. The more capital you owe, the more your options for the type of small business you can begin. You can also take loan at a local bank if you have the credit and the sources to return it. Never put money to the small business that you cannot afford to lose in regards to your budget.

Before even thinking about money you need to look at what kind of business you want to run. Its not a case of seeing how much money you can gather together then using that to setup a business. You need to have the idea before you worry about the money otherwise you will just throw money at the first business that comes into your head.

What are your skills, what did you work at previously. Can you apply those skills to setup some sort of business for yourself. What are your interests, is there a business you could set up around them. From there come up with ideas and a business plan. At that stage sit down and look at money and see if its possible to get the business you want up and running.

I've worked as a business coach for nine years and seen many people try to transition into self employment or a business while holding down a job and it is very difficult and rarely happens.

any new business requires a huge effort to get momentum going and a part time owner who has a full time job is not ideal or advised. that said there are some businesses that could work better than others so for example a franchise type business where you can follow a proven model so that you don't have to do too much trial and error.

here is a programme for people who want to generate ideas for a new business - could be a good starting point. they also run start your own business courses and offer various types of mentoring support and potential funding.

a great book i would highly recommend is "good to great" by jim collins which will give you some insights about how some of the best business leaders really work - and its not just the usual flavour of the month hype.

if you are already in a commercial role of some kind then you have a head start but if you don't then be very cautious. i don't want to dampen your enthusiasm but getting into a business is way easier than getting out of one if you decide it was a big mistake. its not like changing a job where you just resign and look for another one.

    best of luck with it.

The 'Toil and Trouble' PDF on the website for the Department of Family and Social Affairs is a very useful guide for anyone setting up a business.

Go to their website and download the document from the link on the right hand side of the page.

Ah that would be too easy, You'd get a lot more satisfaction securing funding through your own hard work.
