Other than the right to be consulted on adoption, little or none, unless the mother gives him some.

You don't say if he is legally married to his ex - if so then he has automatic guardianship of the child - if not then he has nothing.

    Sad and silly but true.

First all if he is not married and wants to be a part of the childs life tell him to get his name on the birth cert if he can.

    This will stand to him.

Then what he will have to do is go for Guardianship in the courts, Access etc can all be done through the courts at the same time.

    Hi,
Unfortunately unmarried fathers in Ireland have very few legal rights.
Your boyfriend could ask his ex to allow him joint guardianship. If she consents all they have to do is sign The Statutory Instrument.
If she doesn't consent he could apply to the court. In most cases, guardianship is granted by the Judge, unless there is real reason not to.

He should then apply for Access Orders, seek to regurlalise Maintainence etc.
If the parents can agree it is best, rather than going through the Courts

THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE, JUST INFORMATION

as previous person said, apply for everything in court (you can do it yourself) and court will grant interim guardianship and access in my opinion.
