I work in a bankrupt company and expect to be turning off the lights sometime in 2011.

I love the recession. Doing great. Got all my bonuses. Salary hasn't been affected. Tax isn't an issue.

Looking forward to picking up a few properties at rock bottom prices in about twelve months.

TBH, I don't like this thread. Yeah the recession has bypassed me. I've not taken a paycut, i'm getting bonuses ffs and a probable payrise in the new year. But I still know that I'm one step away from the chopping block (despite the above, I really am), and it terrifies me. I have a newborn baby, and tbh, if I lost my job, we would not be able to cope. Fullstop.

I hate this bull**** perception that some people are bullet-proof. I've been lucky, and I know it's exactly that - luck! Jesus, I'm the guy who was taking the dole in '03/'04 when things were amazing for everyone else. And i know what it's like to be relying on parents for food and rent in my mid-twenties. I've been there, and that was when my mates were buying new cars and sh!t. So I don't feel guilty for it (hence why I answered the poll). But unless you're fuck-face bono or the like, you're not untouched.

Clicked pay cut but my hours have been scaled back, hourly pay has actually increased a fraction. Tax is no issue for me. My parents are suffering quite a bit with pay cuts (public service workers) which is shte, but we're gettin on okay.

Fair enough davyjose, but some folk are bullet-proof. I had the misfortune to sit in on a conversation today - hence the thread - between three creatures who are utterly untouched by all of this, and will remain so (trust me), who are snapping up cut-price properties all over ****ing Dublin. That's why I asked the question, I was just interested in how many are in their silky position.

The word "Well?" does not strike the tone of a serious, well-weighted discussion on a matter as tender as this, tbh. Sorry for the back-seat modding, but if you're going to ask people to open up. A little of it yourself would be nice. Unless you want this thread to be a list of...

    Yes

    No

    Yes

    No

    No.

The assumption is you want a discussion on it. Not one-worders. So maybe a bit more than thast from yourself? Again, sorry for the BSM'ing but it's a tender issue I didn't like the kick-off. So the rolleyes = unnecessary.

Although I've taken a small paycut and haven't gotten a raise this year, the recession has been good to me. Things are cheaper and I'm no longer tearing my hair out at the madness that was the celtic tiger.

Some people are Wayne Rooney and Fernando Torres, it's not a reason for me to start a post entitled: who's one of the best footballers in the world? Don't mean to hammer on you, but if 1% of the people of this forum have made any real long-term benefit from the recession, i'll be suprised.

    Nope!

A little bit of input goes a long way OP, and I see from your reply to davyjose that you are willing to do that.

    Fire ahead.

Expect a hard time of it though.

I will, of course. Happy New Year, by the way.

Can I put my hand up here

    I finish college
    I get a job paying 30k
I rent a nice place for cheap
As the cost of living has declined I can afford to put a nice chunk of pay into savings
as the economy slowly recovers these would be expected to mature
as others are unable to find jobs in my area when the economy recovers there could be a shortage, I will have had 4-5 years of experience at that time and still be just 26-27

I'm Irish but currently living in the UK so my recession has been a bit less severe than the one back home from what I understand.

That said, I was made redundant in February, got a better, higher paid job in March, that company went under in September, and I got another better, higher paid job in October.

I've had some incredibly stressful times and have absolutely no savings because I had periods without pay and where I had to move home for new jobs, but I've come out of it a lot stronger for the future and I've learnt a lot so I wouldn't change the year I've had for the world. I do of course worry that the same could happen again but for now things are looking ok!

Crikey. I'm guessing you've had the good sense never to post a poll on this fair website? You type out your thread title/question, you type out your poll questions, and you think you're done. But then they insist - evil authoritarians that they are - that you type at least one word in the message space. I had nothing to add to the thread title and poll options, so I just typed 'well?'....as in, 'what's your opinion?'

So, no, 'well?' didn't mean "you've lost your job? ha, ha, ha"....it just meant, what's your story?

So, no, it wasn't a one-worder, there were many more words than that in the questions.

The rolleyes were targeted at an overly officious....well, you know.

I don't get it. You seem to have a definite plan mapped out on infinite invariables. You'll get a solid, secure job, but nobody in your area will? Have i got that right? Based on what? And on what solid foundation is that 30k a year job based?
I know a LOT of unemployed people who've finished college. I know a LOT of unemployed people who've finished college and have 10+ years experience.
Based on your list, if you assume you're safe, fair play (cos you may well be). But there are no guarantees

    Mod?

The same Mod that gave you advice on how to keep your thread open?

    That would be me then.

Well if you think I am overly officious after I tried to help you then I have no option.
