I have a Tomtom 1 V3 and after having just paid €30 to upgrade the map I have a big red X on the screen that despite all my efforts I cannot get rid of and the thing refuses to work. Really fed up. Googling it shows this up as a common and hard to resolve issue. I certainly have not been able to solve it. So I am fed up with Tomtom and looking to replace it.

Are Garmin any better? Was looking at the GARMIN NUVI215 or should I be considering something else?

    Cheers.

There is a dedicated GPS forum on boards.ie. They may be able to help fix your issue or advise on which Satnav to buy.

FWIW I have a Garmin Nuvi 205W for about 12 months now and have had no issues with it. It does exactly what it says on the tin. Bought it in Halfrauds in Derry for €105, they wanted €150 down here for the same unit.

Are there any firmware updates for your tom tom? reset settings etc. I have a garmin and find it easy to use, acurate etc. There are a few good offers on in halfords at the moment as there having a sale, hard to believe heh:rolleyes:. Have a look here. I'd stay with garmin and get one with bluetooth.

Tom Tom are definitely my favourite but their pc software and applying updates suck.

Have you tried contacting Tom Tom support, the support team are used to updates mucking up and will have a number of steps that you can follow through that won't be published on their website. I did this via email and got it working in a short amount of time.

I tried garmin but came back to tom tom I did not like the device or interface on it at all. If ya want to go down that route I'd say try it out in store first but it seems a bit excessive given you already have a gps and new maps :S

If you have a nokia s60 phone then ovi maps are pretty good - just updated with M50 flyovers now in place

Cheers folks, ended up erasing the disk and re-installing everything, seems to be working fine, but I won't be upgrading the map for some time, seems to be a risky procedure!
