We are currently working on restoring a David Brown 996, I've decided to make video logs of the entire project. You can read more here: http://www.cianmcgovern.com/?p=203

The first one is available on my youtube page at: http://www.youtube.com/cian1500ww

If you'd like to follow the project, subscribe to my youtube channel as there should be plenty more video logs to come.

Might be of interest to some :)

Thanks Dan, it's hard to say what it's worth. In England they're regarded as a vintage tractor and so a collectable item which means it's worth more but here there still really regarded as a working tractor. I'd say once it's done, maybe around the 4-5k mark. Very hard to say, depends on the condition it's in too, ours is getting a full respray which would cost close to 1k to get done with a garage.
We wouldn't have touched it if it had the David Brown cab, they look terrible !!

Often drove a tractor identical to that. Lovely machine for its time, especially with that Sekura (or is it Sankey) cab.

There called a Sekura cab indeed, very well made, no rust whatso-ever. And they come completely apart very easily as you can see in the vid.

Does anyone know if there was meant to be padding inside the cab on the mudguards on the sekura cabs ??

Yeah, there was IIRC, although the last time I saw one was in 2001. I think it was black with little micro holes like on all the tractors of the 1970s (and prone to ripping....)

    Hi mate,
We're at the masking stage at the moment, I'll be away at the Galway rally this weekend but I should have a video up on the weekend of the 12th. We're making slow but steady progress, me being in college all week doesn't help but we're getting there !!

Yeah, they're a very nice cab, well fitted out for their time. I was reading in a recent issue of Classic Tractor that they were only about 1000 of them ever produced. What condition is it in ?

Also give the lift and other hydraulics a good check over if you can. The lift used to give bother if the hydraulic oil filter wasn't routinely changed. I'd ask him when the last time that was done because if it's left too long the lift can feck up costing you a small fortune.

Best of luck anyways and let me know how you get on :)

I would really like to see this when it is finished.
Are you planning on bringing it to shows?

Hard to say Moonbaby, it'll be a working tractor but if we do I'll let you know.

You guys are spoilt with your fancy dancy cabs :D.

I put a lot of time in on a DB990 with a roll bar when I was a kid.

Looking forward to seeing the finished project.

    Good luck

    Cian,

Just had a look at your Restoration Log. I've a DB995 from 1977. Must have it over 20 years now.
You seem to have a decent one there. Chasis looks sound anyway. How is the engine? Burning any smoke?
I've done a bit of work on mine over the years - brake liners, brake & clutch master and slave cylinders, water pump, alternator, starter etc etc. Never had to touch the hydraulics though, thank God.
If you do decide to do the master cylinders, probaly better to replace the whole cylinder, rather than just the seals as they become pitted on the lower surface over time, from water. It gets trapped there. The slave are different in that they are pointing down and so the water gets out. Brake liners are a simple enough job too, have to take off the final drives though.
    Good luck with it anyway!:D
