I am doing a science experiment for junior cert honours science on the ability of different indigestion remedies to neutralise excess stomach acid. Does anyone have or know of any old indigestion remedies??? also what are the best tablets to neuralise excess stomach acid.. rennie or gaviscon..etc.???
    thank you for your help...:)

The best tablets to use will depend on the patient, as medication affects people differently. On the other issue, I imagine there are lots of articles on the internet about 'home-made' indigestion remedies. Just search using Google. Baking soda is obviously something that's been heard a lot about in the past and present.

I wouldn't bother looking into "old indegestion remedies". There are enough commercially available remedies on the market - Rennies, Bisodol, Gaviscon, Milk of Magnesia, etc. Typically 5 remedies would be loads to get results from.

Search the Biology & Medicine forum - I remember seeing a thread in there a few months ago on the use of cider vinegar as a cure for indigestion.

If its old ones you want. Here are some antacids, from the British Pharmaceutical Codex 1934.

Aluminii Hydroxidum; Bismuthi Carbonas; Bismuthi Hydroxidum; Calcii Carbonas; Calcii Hydroxidum; Calcii Phosphas; Creta;Magnesii Carbonas Levis; Magnesii Carbonas Ponderosus; Magnesii Hdroxidum;Magnesii Oxidum Leve; Magnesii Oxidum Ponderosum; Magnesii Phosphas; Potassii Bicarbonas and last but not least, Sodii Bicarbonas!!

Dont worry, its not a spell :D Just they used Latin back then for naming chemicals.

Don't expect extra credit for looking into "old" remedies, etc.

At the end of the day, the marks are not given for results, etc. They're given for your approach, use of scientific method, identification of variables/constants, etc.

Have a look at pages 12-18 of the marking scheme for last years exam to get an idea of what they'll award marks for: http://www.examinations.ie/archive/markingschemes/2009/JC057ALP000EV.pdf
