Hugh Grant - any hope for him? (underrated?)

I think Hugh gets a hard time from critics and the media in general, he gets offered the same kinda movies...rom-coms, i have read interviews whereby he said he's resigned to being typecast and "fine" with the rom-com job offers.

Thing is, he's actually good at what he does, in the scripts and charcters he gets offered....i'm not saying anything he's done is Oscar winning.....but, i always get the sense that a fine actor exists underneath.

Given the chance and the right source material i think Grant has the chops to pull it off, he just needs the right director and motivation. I'd like to see him branch out, in his pre Funerals work he did do some very nice British movies.

    What do you think?

I think thats basicly true, but he appears to be happy enough to be typecast though. Easy work - turn up, smile, kiss the lead actress and pocket a few million. I'm not going to suggest he could have been the Cary Crant of the age (George Clooney had a much better chance in that respect) but he could be doing better.

Grant's best recent role was in 'About A Boy'.. and it was because he didn't play a foppish, bumbling but loveable moron!

I don't think he's under-rated at all though.. he's barely tolerable, never mind talented!

I would love to give him the time of day, but the trailer for Did You Hear About the Morgans played when I went to Sherlock Holmes and holy crap, it looked so bad and unfunny. He needs to be in better movies for me to rate him but he is a charming enough presence

I think Family Guy hit the nail on the head here:

He rarely leaves his rom-com comfort zone. After seeing the trailer for that dire looking film starring himself and Sarah Jessica Parker, I can't see him breaking the mould any time soon.
Maybe some day when he's older and his boyish good looks start to fade he'll take on some serious roles.

I thought he was good in About A Boy and did a great job of being a cad in Bridget Jones 1+2. I'm not sure if he has any great range though. He just always seems to be variations on the floppy haired, stuttering posh English bloke in any film he's in.

He was on Jonathon Ross a few weeks back, and was pretty much pulling the piss out of himself saying that they are the only roles he gets offered and that he is giving up that type of role. The only reason he done the 'morgan' film was because SJP was in it.

I've partly seen a trailer of his new film and it looked pretty good, actually. I don't remember the name, though. Something about a couple, who has marriage problems. I think I'm going to watch it when it's released.

He's done nothing to indicate that he might be capable of anything more then average chick-flicks, can't see that much talent myself, about a boy is the only very good performance he's ever made

Plus he cheated on Liz Hurley. MUPPET!

No no hope at all. Were he to try and play a bastard again then I could see him perhaps having a future but as it stands he's destined to be that foppish English twat. The most surprising thing about his new film is that Sam Elliot is also in it, the pay check must have been pretty big for it. Actually come to think of it that they're trying to showcase Parker as attractive is even more surprising, the woman looks like a horse.

There is a very good reason they are the only type of films he is offered.

My problem with Hugh Grant is that I never find a character likeable when played by him, there's something amazingly annoying and middle of the road about him as an actor.
