How Could someone do This?

As far as I am concerned the following is pretty appalling cruelty and also could put other road users, people and animals at risk.

My cousin was travelling from Newry to Dundalk on Christmas Day at approx lunchtime when he saw a jeep stop on the opposite side of the road and let out 4 labrador dogs unto the road and drove off. The incident took place at around the Jonesboro exit. My cousin has a couple of dogs himself and was shocked at this. He could not turn immediately but turned at the next exit and went back to the spot and also called the gardai who came out.

Unfortunately the dogs had ran off and they only saw 1 across the fields. At least, I suppose, they were not on the roads and not in a position to cause an accident.

I know that there are all sorts out there but this is incredible cruelty, especially considering the temperatures - I am sure that the dogs will struggle to feed themselves, this was done in a period of extremely low temperatures and one would wonder what will happen to these dogs. Whoever did it probably knew that the rodas would be quiet at this time and took their chances.

I would also wonder - who would have 4 labrador dogs and then suddenly want to get rid of them?

Actually the dogs will have no problem killing a sheep, but they are more likely to get run down before that happens.

Does the pound not take in animals for free? Regardless, a single post on here and someone will take them off you within the hour!

No. They charge a re-homing fee, as far as I remember its about €100 per dog.

You can bring a dog to the pound and say it wondered into your garden and you have been trying to advertise for its owner but cannot find him/her

I done this on a genuine situation but i imagine whats to stop you lieing about where you got it.

With modern security features perhaps people no longer see dogs as having a useful purpose.

I know any dog that can be fitted into or comes with a handbag I dont deem anymore useful than a hamster, but wait there is hope. Perhaps mans best friend could once again become a useful companion to modern people.

    Here comes the science!
California Friends Invent Beer Dog Collar

It's a dilemma almost every beer drinker faces: how to open a beer bottle with minimal effort.

And that means making sure an opener is within reach. Two Southern California partiers have come up with a solution that calls man's best friend into service.

They were sitting in his parents' yard when Adam Harris, along with his friend John Hornbeak, stumbled upon greatness.

"We had just a whole bucket of beers, Coronas. I remember a couple dogs and no openers and we said, 'I think that's a good idea. We should try that," said Hornbeak, co-founder of bark4beer.

The company the two created is called Bark 4 Beer - a product single handedly solving one of life's most frustrating questions - does anyone have a bottle opener?

"You call your dog over...you open it up, you put it back on (the dog's collar) and that's it," said Harris, co-founder.

did the gardai say they were going to try find the owner?
surely they can check any camera's in the area etc and try sort it out.

maybe he was just exercising them , the lazy/ ingenious way ... drive off down the road , let the dogs out and in about an hour they will all return

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,951 ✭✭✭dixiefly

I dont think they committed to doing anything, it was on the M1 going northwards at around the jonesboro exit so I dont think there was cctv or too many others on the road considering the time.

shame really. although it might be worth it for them to check concidering the time and the few people on the roads.

boils my blood that someone can do this and get away with it.

Wild animals? Those dogs have probably been spoiled rotten and brought up like babies until they were fúcked out of the van.

    Scumbags.

You should have shot the fckers. Not the dogs, the fella in the jeep. No getting away then.

I know people will try and be fair and say "Maybe he had a reason" but this is the worst part about humanity. Neglect.

People think that a dog is a cute Christmas gift but the novelty wears off and the dump their dogs. Its ****ing disgraceful.

As somebody who has had a dog before I realised it would not be an easy job being an owner.

Its not the dog's fault that their owner is a short-sighted **** but they will suffer the consequences.

If you ever throw out a dog because you don't want it, I hope you rot in hell.

The dogs if they are lucky will be taken in by a dog-pound and saved by a new owner but sometimes they are not so lucky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,565 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

he said dogs rather than puppies so i assume they were adult.

why would someone keep the dogs for a time and then just dump 4 of them?

Maybe he owned the land beside the road and frequently lets the dogs out there to run home and get exercise etc.

Then again maybe he was just dumping them, what kind of condition were they in do you think?

Having grew up in the backar*e of nowhere, nothing surprises me anymore. You'd be surprised how many dogs get dumped at the side of the road. The lucky ones were able to walk when it happened cos god love the state of the others ye'd find... :( It's an awful disgrace that in this day and age people don't research what goes into the care of an animal.

What was the point in calling the guards?

Doesn't ring true to me. Sure you'd sell Labradors for a good enough price and someone with 4 would know that.

Very fishy version of a story imo.

No they don't. You can leave the dogs in the pound. It's people who claim them or adopt them that have to pay some money for the "upkeep" of the pound.

    In Galway's case it's 20 euro.

I put upkeep in inverted commas because any pound I've seen is a disgrace.

If I had my way, the selling, giving or other form of trading pets would be banned for the months of November, December and January.

It happens every year. It's like banging your head against a brick wall.

Tbh, i didnt ask him that question.

I assume, when he saw it happen the dogs were on the M1 so there was a possibility of an accident. He was prepared to try and retrieve the dogs himself and probably thought that the guards would be able to assist especially if there was any disturbance on the road etc. he probably also thought that they would have contact details for this type of situation - especially on Christmas Day. He probably also reckoned that an offence of some sort had been committed - even if it was just a road traffic offence.

What would you have done yourself in the same circumstances?

I have a feeling that these would have been with their owner for quite a period or at least some of of them anyway. After all, it was four that was let out.

Is OP sure this wasnt some guy using dogs for hunting? Kinda sounds like it could be.

Bit of a coincidence that they were let off ****ed out on Christmas Day.

Were any of them smaller ie younger than the others?

If they were being neglected (as opposed to being let out for a run in a place they were familiar with) I'd have no problem dealing harshly with the person in question.

I won't describe on here what I would do.

This happened where I'm from, a few years ago a dog was dumped out of a car in front of our house (rural area, very quiet road at the time). He wasn't in great health but we took him in and had him for a year or two until he died.

The odd thing was, a week or so after the dog was dumped a car came to our house and the driver wandered around the garden for a while until we asked her what she wanted. She claimed she was lost, but we're all fairly sure hers was the car that dumped the poor dog. Stupid wagon was probably trying to see if we'd kept him, but I've no idea why..

What I was told was that the jeep drove off up the motorway. I find it hard to see how that could be some guy hunting. I mean - who would just let dogs out on a motorway and drive off if they cared about the dogs at all -m after all they could get hit by a car!

It's the bank's fault for giving them a 100% mortgage in the first place.
