Cycle to work scheme, ka-ching!

Currently I'm a pretty enthusiastic recreational rider with a lovely aul giant scr 4.0 which is begining to show it's age and somewhat budget lineage. For this reason I think it's time to avail of the cycle to work scheme thingy and get a proper racing bike. My budget is approx 1000 euro and I want something that'll let me bash out a 100km or two at a quick jolt of a sunday morning and maybe a bit of racing now and again if my unhurried disposition will allow it.
I've been looking at the £899 planet X oft mentioned on this forumn but I'm a bit iffy about buying online and I'm wondering what else is out there that might suit me and more importantly, my budget.
    Any suggestions?

Well to walk into a shop you could get the Giant Defy 2 or Lapierre Audacio. Both are alu framed, running Tiagra grouppos, and finished with adequate wheels and finishing kit.

Personally to make the best use of my money I'd just get my sizing right on the Planet X and buy

If it's any help the PX comes basically ready to ride, you just have to put on the bars and front wheel and pump the tyres IIRC. Gears are indexed and brakes adjusted. A lot more bike than the bikes mentioned by Che, which would not be much of an upgrade from what you have already.

Well I'm not so much worried about whether the Planet X comes ready to ride or not as I am worried about buying a bike I've never seen before never mind ridden since it could be the wrong size or just really uncomfortable for me. Do you know what their policy on returns is if you change your mind? Would it be a problem?

    Planet X returns policy...

    Returns

Your rights to return products are outlined in the Distance Selling Regulations, it’s essence in a brief summary is as follows :

If you need to send something back for an exchange or refund because its ‘our fault’ i.e. the product is faulty, mis-described, damaged etc, or we have managed to send you the wrong thing… then we will either ask you to return it via the postal service and reimburse reasonable costs on receipt or, for larger items such as frames/bikes, offer to arrange a courier collection.

If you want to return a product for any other reason i.e. It’s not what you wanted, it doesn’t fit, you have changed your mind etc then we are happy to accept unused products back for an exchange or refund at your expense within 28 days of receipt.

I'm in a similar pickle - would someone be so good as to link to the Planet X mentioned in the OP? Thanks in advance
