I know people can suggest friends to you through Facebook and Facebook can do it too if you have their email in your address book, but.............

I had a friend suggestion the other day. It was a guy i knew from when i was a kid. The thing is:
    • I havent got his email address
    • He has no mutual friends
    • He didnt add me as a friend
    • I've never searched for him (I couldnt even spell his name)
As far as Facebook is concerned, there is completely no connection between us, yet he appeared as a suggestion. How is this? Did he search my name and Facebook suggested him to me? I'm confused.

Just thought i'd ask on here as to what criteria Facebook use to suggest friends.

Perhaps you both have the same school listed on your profile?

There's a connection somewhere. He's probably a friend of someone who's a friend of a friend of one of your friends.

I'd like to know more about this as well.

a colleague of mine asked me something similar the other day. she had received a facebook invite from somebody who had put a load of pictures up in their profile and wanted to share them with collegues.

Its imortant to note that she isnt actually on facebook at all , so when she received the mail it said that you might also be interested in these other people on facebook and listed 4 other people.
    • my colleague knew all 4 of those people (distantly) even though the guy who sent the mail didnt.
    • those 4 people had no connection to each other and wouldnt have known each other.
    • my colleague didnt have their email address and would not have previously mailed any of them

obviously its not coincidence, I couldnt explain it tought, especially seeing as she hasnt mailed any of them and doesnt even have their addresses anyyway.
