A big thanks to all on the cycling forum, especially those who have posted such fantastic advice here over the past year. As a newcomer to road cycling and not being too knowledgeable on the subject, I am not a frequent contributor although I am an avid reader.

All too often we hear of the selfish me me me society that we have become. Well this forum proves the opposite, as I and many other recipients of your advice can testify. I am often in awe of the generosity shown by many here, giving unselfishly of your time while dispensing such valuable gems of info to total strangers who happen to pose the perennial questions, "Is this bike any good?"....."Recommend me this, that or the other"..... etc, etc, etc.

I have also had the pleasure of meeting several of you on some spins during the year (Yes, that was me looking the right eejit on the flat bar Spesh. Sirrus) and despite being the odd one out, was welcomed and encouraged along the way with some handy tips, not to mention some nifty mechanical help also.

Thanks to recommendations here, I have purchased the following and other items:

    Focus Cayo 09 Ultegra
    Giro Atmos Helmet
    Specialized S Works Road Shoes
    Garmin Edge 705
    Cateye Strada
    Topeak JoeBlow Track Pump
    Fenix TK 11 Front Light+charger+batteries
    Blackburn Mars 4 Rear Light
    Topeak Saddle Bag
    Topeak Multitool

So now, although my cycle clothing is a mixture of Decathlon/Aldi/Lidl, I now feel I am the complete Euro Fred….ok then….POB cyclist!!!:)

As a way of showing my gratitude for all the advice given so freely, and knowing how cake is so popular here, I would like to invite all Boardsies within spitting distance of Dublin to join me for coffee and cake in Glendalough Fayre (or other café if it suits) subject to the following terms and conditions:

    Date & Time: Saturday 09/01/2010 9.00-9.30am
    Meeting Point: Dundrum
Weather Permitting, i.e. no ice on mountain roads
Cycle to Laragh via Sally Gap or other route
Return to Dublin via Wicklow Gap or other route
You must wait for me if necessary at the tops of hills!!!:D

    P.S. Route open to suggestions

So there you are, basically it’s a Saturday spin with the coffee and cake on me. So who’s in?

Wow, fair play, quite a gesture.
Might make it along, but I don't think you'll be going over sally or wicklow at the weekend - impassible according the AA over the last couple of days...

'This' could also mean 'This' as in 'This specific' Saturday. :P

Hi jimm - that's a very generous offer but I think given the weather we're currently enduring and the desperate road conditions I think it'd be better to postpone it for a couple of weeks. Cheers anyway and happy cycling in 2010!

I probably can't make the main event, but could meet you all in A&E afterwards. I believe they do coffee, not sure about the cake.

I can confirm they do coffee. You need to be admitted overnight to qualify for the cake. I would recommend the Beaumont - they have had some pretty decent experience of cyclists

    Wow, how generous!

I will be there if the roads are clear or the route decides to take the lowland approach and go for a hammerfest :D

Unless we're on quad bikes or snowmobiles I guess Sally and Wicklow are off limits for the present. For all Boardsies with a cake craving I will resurrect this thread next week if conditions improve.

    Cheers

All I can say is, never suggest anything around here, ever...someone is bound to pop up and say "great idea, we cant rent some here".

    Mountain bike spin?

    Hi folks,

I proposed this spin some months ago but with the ice and snow it never happened and I haven't forgotten it. Digging it out now from under its winter blanket. Anyway, for those not racing, audaxing, sleeping or any other excuse, I'm throwing out a feeler to see if there is any interest in heading out tomorrow Sat.

    Same route as originally planned.

    Cheers.

    Hey Jimm,

Firstly nice bike. Mate got that very model so I've given it a spin. Sweet ride and a lovely paint job on it as well. Focus make good bikes. Ednwireland the 105 bike is very good as well so no shame there.

Tomorrow I'll be on the road in Blessington by 8am so if you happen to be there at that time and interested in tacklign the south wing of the 200 then welcome aboard. If not enjoy the spin. If your ever planning on venturing out Blessington way let me know and I'll meet you somewhere.

    Graham

Thanks guys. Yeah, I'm really pleased with the Cayo, my first real road bike after riding the Sirrus for 2 years, and it's true what has been said here tons of times...."buy a flat bar hybrid and you will eventually take the plunge with drop bars"

So......where are all the cake-aholics this evening???

READ ALL ABOUT IT "SHOCK, HORROR--BOARDSIES GONE OFF CAKE!"

Sorry Jimm, family commitments this weekend mean I can't make it.

Wicklow boards spins seem a bit thinner on the ground this year as a higher number of the usual suspects are racing.

Another one that can't make it. No riding all week for me due to work. Roll on Monday.

Hey Jimm, will probably pass you on the road if you're out tomorrow. Im heading up the gap too, but from opposite side. Heading to Bray - Laragh - Sally Gap - Dundrum.

By the way, someone mentioned alot of Boardies are away racing. Do Boards have a racing team?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 638 ✭✭✭LastGasp

Heading out about 7am for 150kms around WW. If I'm passing thru Laragh and see a bunch of Boardsies munching cake I'll drop in !

No, we are all in various clubs. There is only one race this weekend, on Sunday in Monaghan, as the RAS is starting. In two minds on it myself, may skip it to test out my touring/bike repairs which start tomorrow morning. I may end up in Laragh around lunchtime (at which point cake would be most welcome.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,112 ✭✭✭Blowfish

I'm another heading out at different times to everyone else. Again, I'll be passing through Laragh (twice infact) so will poke any other boardsies I see.
