I've been given the job of finding a new laptop for my mother...

The prerequisites are: bigger screen, and that it must have a webcam built in. I'm thinking 17" would be enough. It won't be doing a lot of travelling so portability is not a priority.

It easy for me to compare specs online but I can't get a feel for build quality and robustness - do any of you have any suggestions for brands that are better than most in this regard?

The keyboard should be impervious to coffee, wine and cigarette ash. All input plugs must be strong enough to withstand someone who cannot grasp the idea that USBs have an up and a down side to the plug, and ideally the whole laptop should not be overly averse to being dropped occasionally. I'm not asking too much here, am I? :p

The laptop will only be used for internet and light programs so performance is not a priority - but a good clear and bright screen would be nice for failing eyes.

Budget is anything up to about €700. Maybe €750.

So, who makes a laptop that might be pensioner proof?

So far I've been looking at
    MSI on komplett.
    Toshiba on komplett
    Acer
HP on komplett (bit over budget but might be worth it?)
    Dell on, um, dell
    These ones on dabs

    Thanks for any help!

I bought this today, what sold me was the 17inch brightview LED screen, 569 in PCWorld seems similar to the Dell in your list, I am just not mad on dell and i hate waiting!!!

Thanks. I'm not mad on waiting either, and the ability to do a bit of tyre kicking before handing over the cash is always welcome.

I think I'll head up to blanchardstown and have a wander around PC-World, Harvey Norman and the rest. Bound to be a few deals going at the moment.

What does the build quality on the compaq feel like?
