Can any one recommend a scope for my .243 rifle, also the price. I will be using the rifle to shoot deer and foxes.

buy a german or european made scope if you can afford to , they are miles ahead of the chinese made junk . meopta are good and not crazy money and pecar are excellent too and made to take abuse and last.

Thanks Rowa. I was also wondering what magnification would suit my .243

i had an eight power ( 8x ) on a deer rifle and never found it lacking , maybe a bit more for foxes , i wouldn't go mad though .

Zeiss, Doctor, Meopta, IOR, Kahles, Schmidt & Bender, IOR, Nikon, Pentax, Leupold etc etc... the list is endless. I have a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 myself. Granted it's sitting on a .22hornet and not on a .243 but it's plenty scope for less than €500 if you can import it from the States. My aim is getting deer permissions for next year and acquiring a .308. I'll trade in the hornet but I'll keep the scope and mount it on whatever I'll be getting as a deer rifle.

    Steve,

if I were you I would keep the hornet as dealers will give you nothing for it as they were inundated with them when the .223 came out and still have a lot of them, also you will regret getting rid of the little beauty that is the hornet as I did.

    Sorry for going off thread.

Hello,i usually stalk with an old 6x Diatal, probably not enough for you but you'd be surprised what you can get used to,if your going to lamp then i'd research reticle's and be sure you choose something that suits you
    Do you have a budget?
Quality 6x will be way ahead of a cheap 8x and so on so you may think you're getting good value but not really

hi i'd recommend swarovski ph 2.5-10x56 . 30mm tube , bit expensive but you'll never want to change it , great lamping scope , even better stalking scope

hey hillman, the scope i use on my 6.5 is a docter 8x56. it has a number 4 recticle with an illuminated dot. i use it for both stalking and foxing. i payed over the odds for it, so i found out after i bought it for around 730euro. it dosent matter now because i wouldnt part with it for anything. ive shot foxes using it out to 300yrds. hope ive helped in some way.

take a look at the leopold vx3 4-14x40....I put one my 7mm08 for the deer this year as the fun fund didnt allow a s&b...... I cant fault it for the price i paid...If i remember right i got change out 500 squibs....
Thisis the new model...I got the old one for under 500... but you can get 2nd hand s&b these days for good money...A 2nd hand top of the line scope is as good as a new one(maybe a few scratches but the deer dont mind)

I have a Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40 on my .243, I got it from the US and I think it was around $200 or so inc postage.
My personal opinion is that it is fine for the ranges I shoot at <400m and usually around 150m or less for Deer.
They are good scopes for the money, clear and they have the Rainguard coating which helps in wet weather, the water beads up and runs off rather then smearing.
The Japanese Bushnell Elite series are a different animal to the cheaper Chinese Bushnell Banner etc.
For my uses 40mm is fine, if I did a lot more low light work then maybe a 50mm would be better but it would have to be a lot better for me to be bothered changing.

+1 on the elite 4200.....Had one meself for a good while(6-24x40)....Defenately get your bang for ya buck with them... Has to be an elite though as the lesser models dont really cut it....

i agree with the above try for a 2nd hand german in some of the irish or english gun shops 6 power by 26 mm is plenty, life time garauntee for 450e give or take .More power is no advanage for large targets at <200m, get nos from isd or gun mart

You might be right on that one. It's an Anschutz in very good nick and some twat who got great praise from friends of mine offered me tops 200 for it last year against a new CZ .223. Told him he could have the S&K scopemounts and split rings I have on her for that money. And that lands me nicely back to the subject of scopes. Don't forget that your mounts are just as important as the scope itself.

You will not go wrong with any of the scopes recommended.

Enter - Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest - into Google and see who has it on sale. :D
