Winter clothing noob

    I'm looking at buying some new trousers. I'm aware that cotton is rubbish when it gets wet, but has anyone here ever tried 50/50 cotton/nylon? I'm not looking for waterproof clothing, i just don't want to freeze when I get a bit rained on.

    I'm a mountaineer, all help appreciated.

    What I use when hiking in winter:

    - Polyester thermals (like the Helly Hansen base layer stuff)
    - Fleece jumpsuit (used to use it for caving, great for winter hiking, http://www.warmbac.com/undersuit.htm you can find them on loads of online outdoor sports retail sites... http://www.hitchnhike.co.uk/acatalog/meander_powerstretch_undersuit.html)
    - Other gear like decent outdoor jacket, nylon pants, the usual stuff...
    - Extra pair of socks.
    - Fleece balaclava, with Thinsulate balaclava in the backpack for higher ground.

    This stuff usually does me grand for days like we've had recently. Although on drier days I've just used an extra pair of jogpants instead of the nylon ones, and kept the nylon ones in the backpack.
    Hiking poles provide a bit more stability when on ice. I would remove the rubber knob and use the metal tips.
