Irish Cyclocross Championships 2009 and Cyclocross Intervarsities

    Event: St Anne's Cyclocross Race

Hosted by: Dublin City University Cycling Club & Team WORC

    Sponsors: Bike-Pure (http://bikepure.org/),
    Schlamm Clothing (http://www.schlamm.uk.com/schlamm/)

Date: January 10th, Course open from 11am.

    Sign on: From 10:30am.

The Irish National Cyclocross Championships 2009 will take part in the scenic St Anne's park in Raheny. The Park, the second largest municipal park in Dublin, is part of a former 500 acre estate assembled by members of the Guinness family, beginning with Benjamin Lee Guinness in 1835. But on the 10th of January will see fast racing to decide who will become the National Champion of Ireland.

Will you fall foul to the surging Naniken River? Will you stop to visit the Herculanean Temple? Or, will you just visit the Duck Pond?

Bring your fastest tires, strip off all non essential parts, and warm up your running legs. You will not be disappointed. True too the spirit of cross, and adding a bit of Belgian flair, steps and run-ups are the name of the day with fast linking stages in-between. This course will make you suffer. But sure that's what cross is all about.

Following on from last year’s race this course is sure to provide close matched bunch racing and more than enough speed to blow off the Christmas excess.

Race details: Underage - 12pm (non championship race).
All other categories - 1pm (Senior men, women, veterans, juniors)

Note: in the case that there are not enough riders to validate a national championship being held, riders will compete within the race as normal, but no for championship status.

Entries: As this is a national championship entries are available on the day to all Cycling Ireland Members in accordance with Cycling Ireland rules:

    (a) Members of Cycling Ireland with a Full Competition Licence
    (b) Members of a UCI affiliated federation with an IRL UCI code.
    (c) Members of Cycling Ireland with a Club or Restricted Competition Licence, who have taken the appropriate one day licence for the day of the championship.
    (d) Members of a UCI affiliated federation with a UCI code other than IRL who have a defined residency qualification in Northern Ireland.

Note: Riders with NO Cycling Ireland race licence may NOT avail of a one day licence to race on the day. A Cycling Ireland Commissar will be present on the day to field any questions.

Rules: The race will be held in accordance with Cycling Ireland rules as regards to cyclo-cross which are available on the Cycling Ireland website (Chapter 9, Rules 2009, Feb 09, V16). Please note:

Chapter 9, article 28: Only bikes described in the Equipment Regulations Appendix AT2 as “cyclo cross bikes” may be used in the National Cyclo Cross Championships.

Sign on: Sign on and prize giving will be hosted within the Red Stables complex within the park, prize giving will also be presented here after the race. Cost of entry is €20 per rider, €5 of which will be donated to our sponsors Bike-Pure. Please note cyclists are not to enter the sign on area wearing cycling shoes.

Parking: Parking is located at two places within the grounds of the park. The Red Stables car-park on Mount Prospect Avenue, and the costal car-park on James Larkin Road.

Area Closures: Certain sections of the park will be taped off for safety reasons to avoid clashes between cyclists and pedestrians. All major junctions with pathways will be marshalled and still passable by the public.

    • Please KEEP DOGS ON A LEAD near racing cyclists
    • Keep an eye out for cyclists while crossing junctions or taped areas
    • Bring other to come along to support the race and the riders

Further information will be made available in the coming days on:
    www.mtbireland.com

    Yours,

Greg May (Team WORC, Dublin City University Cycling Club)

Should be on for this, hopefully will get my new derailleur and hanger on to the bike before then. Someone should do derailleurs in ten-packs.

Is it considered OK for beginners to race this? I'd start at the back and get out of the way when I'm being lapped.

I know I wanna do it. Mind you, my license hasn't come through for 2010 yet.

Good point, it's the 2009 National Champs so will 2009 license do? My own club is doing membership renewals on Tuesday 5 January so unlikely license will be appearing before the race.

    Hi guys,

2009 licence is ok. Event if you have never raced cross, come along, it is an excellent course.

REMEMBER, you cannot get a one day licence on the day.

I will be in the (c) category, Members of Cycling Ireland with a Club or Restricted Competition Licence, who have taken the appropriate one day licence for the day of the championship. Think Raam will be too? I will be taking out a full racing license in 2010 though doubt that will have appeared by race day.

Hmm, I don't have a full competition license from last year (I went with club competition), but I have applied for one for 2010. Would I still be permitted to ride?

    Hi RAAM,

As the rules say, club licence is ok, you need to pay for a one day licence on top of your club licence.

Will check with the commissar though, if you can get details of your 2010 licence all the better

    Please bare with me.

As the time draws closer its all about the small details! Hopefully this will help you to
get to the race as easily as possible, despite the weather.

Just to start from the start, unless conditions make it 100% impossible to race on the course, or a modified version of the course that is designed for such conditions, the race is going ahead. The only situation that will result in the race being cancelled is that the park decide that we are not allowed hold the race, or the commissar on the day decides that the course is too dangerous to race on.

    In short, unlikely.

When travelling to the race please take the upmost care. If road conditions stay as is, it may take you longer to get across/through the city than normal. Those of you travelling from long distances to the race on the morning of the race please leave plenty of time to arrive safe and rubber side down! If it makes more sense for you to travel up on Saturday please do so.

This is a national championship, and potentially one of the first chances for many of us to race in the snow in a version of mini Belgium. Please note it is also an intervarsity event. If you are a registered student, or on a year of grace (one year out of a degree), please bring student ID. This is to be run in conjunction with the main race and CI regulations for racing and entering the race still apply. For further info on the intervarsity event please email cycling.dcu(at)gmail(dot)com

    Race Day Arrangements:

Parking: Parking is located at two places within the grounds of the park. The Red Stables car-park on Mount Prospect Avenue; and the costal car-park on James Larkin Road.

Directions: St. Anne's Park, Dublin James Larkin Road 3, Co. Dublin City, Ireland
    Link: Google Maps

Sign on: Located at the Red Stables complex, it will be signed from the car park. A specific room will be available if people ride to the event and need to leave equipment. This is NOT a changing room. Please leave off road shoes in the car when entering the building.

From: 10:30 – 12pm as the timing laptop is needed for the races!

Cost of entry is €20 per senior rider, €5 of which will be donated to our sponsors Bike-Pure, and €5 for underage riders. Due to the time of the year and the big R word, we are not adding extra costs to cover food. However…

Food, coffee, etc: A café is located in the Red Stables complex as well as a farmers market with lots of drinks and treats on offer for reasonable prices.

Start/finish: This is located on the main avenue within the park, look out for the off road commission tent!

    St%20Annes%20CX%202009.jpg

Non Championship Underage race: 12pm, also under 5’s scoot along/random bike Mini- race (parents can walk alongside!)

Senior race: 1pm sharp, all categories

Prize giving: Will be located in the same room as sign on. This will be approximately 30mins from the finish of the event senior race.

    Licence eligibility:

As this is a national championship entries are available on the day to all Cycling Ireland Members in accordance with Cycling Ireland rules:

(a)Members of Cycling Ireland with a Full Competition Licence

    (b) Members of a UCI affiliated federation with an IRL UCI code.

(c)Members of Cycling Ireland with a Club or Restricted Competition Licence, who have taken the appropriate one day licence for the day of the championship.

    (d) Members of a UCI affiliated federation with a UCI code other than IRL who have a defined residency qualification in Northern Ireland.

    IVCA licences are not eligible

Currently one day licences are not eligible

Please bare with me over the next 24 hours as we (race organisers and Off Road Commission) try to resolve some of the issues surrounding the one day licence.

As you can imagine, we want to get as many people racing as possible. However we have to work within the rules of Cycling Ireland.

Hope to see you on Sunday,

    Greg, DCU Cycling/Team WORC

why the €5 donation to Bike Pure?

Could it not go somewhere more needed like SVDP in these cold, recessionary times?

Looked up Bike Pure web page briefly there to try and get info on their status etc. Not much detail except to say "an independent, global organization".

Isn't it run by an individual? Is it a registered charity, company or what?

They are supporting the race with prizes and it was a choice of the organisers, aka me, who has a feeling that any move done to help increase the awareness of anti doping and clean cycling in sport is a good thing.

Please don't use the R word. It makes me cry.
