DIY fillings?

Sorry if this is a really stupid question but would love some advice please!
A chunk fell off one of my back teeth over the Christmas, I've rang several dentists but got answering machines for all saying they're not back open til January 4th.

The tooth itself is grand I'm not in any pain with it, its black in the middle so I'm guessing its rotten in the middle.
What's driving me mad is the broken bit has a rough edge and its cutting my tongue/side of my mouth when I sleep.

Is there anything temporary I could get to fill it til I get to a dentist?

Also, when I do get a filling would the dentist normally recommend X ray before they will fill? I'm pregnant so don't want an X ray.

    Cheers,

    C:pac:

I remember seeing a "temporary filling" in boots not too long ago. It looks like some paste you push into the cavity and it hardens.

    Might help

Thanks a mill cunnins4, I was just lucky that the the dentist could fit me in this morning and got a filling done but I may as well pick up this kit to have.
I have a few other teeth that need filling but they can't do it as I'm pregnant so I have a feeling this might not be the only tooth to give up on me!

    Thanks again, C
