Blu-Ray on iMac

I'm thinking about purchasing an iMac, but I don't want to buy one if it can't play Blu-Ray Discs. I'm also wondering, do iMacs have HDMI ports, because from time to time, I would like to connect it to my HDTV.

Thanks in advance for any response.

No, iMacs can't play Blu-Ray movies. They also don't have HDMI ports out-of-the-box but you may be able to get a cable, not sure on that. I'm sure Sad Professor will be able to answer your question :p

I've a HDMI - DVI adapter lying around here somewhere.

That would do the job I suspect.

Thanks for the responses. In light of what I learned, I won't be buying an iMac for now. The HDMI/DVI adapter was a good idea, but unfortunately it doesn't carry sound.

I'll just have to wait until the Apple people move with the times!

Just connect the sound separately. If all you are doing is connecting it to a HDTV then the lack of HDMI is no reason to not get an iMac. If you wanted to connect something (a blu-ray player, games console, etc) to the iMac that would be a different story.

Not gonna happen. HDMI is licensed so Apple would have to pay Sony/whoever for using it. Apple will be dragged kicking and screaming into adding a blu-ray drive, never mind a HDMI port. They'd rather everyone buy from the iTunes movie store instead.

You could buy an external blu ray drive and play the discs through windows via bootcamp. And I believe iMacs have digital audio out via the headphone
port for sound. Just to point out it could be done but you are right, apple should jump on the blu ray bandwagon.
