The Past Decade

Hey all, just thought it would be nice to hear your opinions on the past decade. You know, opinions on stuff such as celebs who have had the worst decade, the best decade, biggest fall from grace etc etc. I'll get the ball rolling, join in if ya dare. :p

Celeb who had the best decade - Simon Cowell

Seriously, for a man who has produced duff such as Robson & Jerome and Sinnitta, he hasn't half made himself a global star. Not only has he carved out a highly bankable persona, but he has basically had the magic touch with all of his TV projects on both sides of the atlantic.

Also, I don't think Cowell has experienced one media scandal since being in the limelight for pretty much the entire decade. For a man with so much exposure, that is highly impressive.

So bravo Cowell, you lucky bastard. ;)

Celeb who had the worst decade - Kerry Katona

Has she had any lucky, like any at all? Firstly she's seen as the talentless one in a pretty talentless band. Her bloke then trades her in for an Aussie beauty after she helps him shed a few stone. Then her next bloke has "user" written all over him. Then she loses all her lucrative contracts after one too many cocaine scandals. Finally, she becomes bankrupt. She's even sold down the river by her own mother as well as by her own PR consultant. She's the perfect example of how unforgiving and cruel the media can be to genuinely talentless people who somehow make it into the spotlight. Justice or Tragedy? I'd have to go with the latter.

Biggest fall from grace - Michael Jackson

It would be too easy to say Britney, at least Britney has seemingly got herself back on track.

Where to start? His attempted comeback at the start of the decade falls flat. He disastrously puts his trust in a journalist whose only motive was to paint the image of a man who is deranged. He finds himself back in a position that already nearly destroyed his career, in the process completely undoing what he achieved with the History album.

He somehow survives another trial, yet the odd public appearance that he does make paints the picture of a man who is completely lost. Who could forget when he attempted a big comeback at an awards show only to shambolically shuffle his way through a song that he didn't even know the words to?

Finally, the poor chap dies, a death that has seen of number of snakes take advantage of, apparent friends who had no time for him when he was alive.

    Biggest Comeback - Gary Barlow

You could have forgiven Gary Barlow if after Take That's successful comeback that he sat down and written a series of carefully worded "**** You" letters to a number of people. The chap took some awful abuse after Robbie surprised everyone and became the "successful" one out of Take That, while Barlow fell into oblivion.

Fast forward a few years and Take That announce a reunion to a sea of sniggers and jibes. What happens? Gary Barlow writes so many good songs that even blokes are willing to listen to Take That (which for all us folk old enough, would have been sacrilege back in the day). He writes an entire soundtrack to a film. Then he caps off the decade with Paul McCartney as his new buddie who hails his songwriting abilities.

Bravo Gary Barlow, you've shown us all that no matter how **** life gets, there's always the possibility that you can have the last laugh in life. ;)

There ya go people, join in if you want and add your own categories if you like!

The Noughties was the decade that celebrity became a truly dirty word, a world populated by talentless egomanicas and loathsome media scumbags, and people who are not and never were going to be celebrities but are merely quite well known for a short period of time.

You only have to watch chat shows to see how things have changed in teh last 30 years. Once the LLS had could have everyone from Edward De Bono to Peter Ustinov and Muhammed Ali now its populated by reality TV "singers"/"dancers" and minor politicos.

I’ll remember the noughties for people unnecessarily shoe horning words into disregarding the context of where they are writing while making entirely unoriginal points.

    !

I would class what Cowell did as a great piece of business alright, but I'm gonna go with someone who was already a celebrity, but has a lot to thank the noughties for. Kiefer Sutherland. He hadn't been doing a whole lot, but then came 24. He's had a few brushes with the law, but you can't argue that this decade hasn't been amazing for him!

I'm not sure I'd class her as much of a celebrity tbh. She's had an awful decade, but it's almost entirely her own fault. So, again, I'm gonna plump for someone who was already famous, but slipped into relative obscurity all through the noughties. Macauley Culkin began the decade on the back of success from Home Alone and was tipped to be a star, but has done nothing since. He's currently doing Mila Kunis though, so it hasn't been all bad for him :)

No doubt about it, it was a shocker for him, but the frenzy with which his tour was being greeted, plus the enormous grief over his death by so many is showing that he still had many fans.

Apart from Gary Glitter and Michael Barrymore, it's hard to find someone who has had a bigger fall from grace. Maybe Tom Cruise?

Not gonna agree with you on this one. He's really only reverted to what he was doing before. He tried it on his own and failed, so he's back with the band. You could argue that they are better than before and their music is more appealing to a wider audience alright. I'd agree with that! As this thread is decade-themed, I'm gonna go with U2,who began the noughties on the back of some rubbish albums like Pop and Zooropa, but then released some great stuff and totally rewrote the book on touring and putting on a show. This re-evolution has spanned the entire decade.

    New category?

    Tosser of the decade
Choose from Pete Doherty (gets my vote every time!), Kerry Katona, Jordan, Amy Winehouse, Kate Moss...where to stop!!
