Hey I think there is a possiblity I might not be able to collect my Job Seekers Allowence on Wednesday becasue of the bad frost and snow on my roads as the roads really are in a bad state full of ice (I live in the countryside) and therefore I may not be able to make it to the Post Office. Do you think I should ring the Social Welfare Office or the Post Office? What should I do?

Why do you want to ring them, there is nothing they can do.

Just collect it as soon as you can.

Why don't people get paid in the bank, it is a lot easier

But wont they want to know why I cant collect it that is why I was thinking should I ring them. Doesnt money only stay in PO for a few days and then go back into them or something just wondering what to do?

Sorry but anyone can get a form from the social welfare to have their payments made through the bank. (when did this change?)

Ring Dublin and asked them for the form.

You have 3 month's to collect any check from the social welfare, I know this because before i was put on Disability Allowance and then later change my payment to the bank, I was often to sick to go collect the money, so i was told i had 3 month's to collect it.
As far as i know this as not changed

if you worried about it put your mind at rest, give the welfare office a call, explain your problem and asked them if there will be a problem collecting at a later date.

You can also asked them if this happens again how long do you have to collect your money, that way you have the information for any future problems.

i know how you feel , out cottage is at the top of mountain, well big hill lol, and the only way up and down is with the neighbours quad bike.

For JA/JB, this only applied after you've been claiming for six months. Until then, you have to collect weekly at your nominated post-office, or (for temping and short-hours people) submit weekly dockets and get cheques posted to you.

It was changed to this ... umm ... a bit over 12 months ago, to stop cases where foreign nationals were claiming even though they'd shifted overseas and were flyng back once a month to sign.

I'm not even going to discuss this sentence.

In any case as i said before.

Social Welfare Offices rarely answer phones now so phoning the Post Office to check how long this week's payment will remain there will put your mind at ease.

Ring Dublin and asked them for the form.

It changed in July 2008 and, in a further attempt to prevent welfare fraud, on 6 April 2009 the rules changed further to require people collecting benefit payments at the post office to produce valid photographic ID on request.

Why not? That's PRECISELY why the change was implemented. Foreign nationals (and i'm including people from the North and the UK in this) were getting their dole paid into their bank account and flying here/getting the train down to sign on once every 1-2 months, whilst claiming or working back home. There was *massive* benefits fraud going on here because of this.

Sure even now you are never asked for ID when you collect your dole payments at the post office.

OP - you get three days to collect. But you'll need to collect it by tomorrow as obviously the post office won't be open on the 1st. And tomorrow might be a half day if you're paid in a sub-post office (one within a shop, for example).

    Why? It's the truth.

There was a large amount of fraud going on (especially over Christmas when you get a large break from signing on). It was not just foreign nationals, it was Irish recent ex-pats. €800 per month is a lot of money...
