*This Is Not A Parody Thread* .. but the other one made me think of it..

There's actually a place called New Ireland.. it's a large island off New Guinea.. used to be called 'Gerrman New Guinea' but we must have defeated them in some game or something to take the name :P

Anyway, should we go there and make it our own? Sure the job's already half done

We invaded plenty of other countries, but we go only armed with a sleeping bag and a phone number.

Somehow I am thinking that your return journey would be much much quicker than expected.

I only came to ask a question, and tonight makes it my second. So somehow I don't think that that island is Irish afterall.

Was that the one on The Panel ages ago, the Irish tourist board 'declared war' on them for the slogan; "Come to New Ireland, it's better than Old Ireland" ??

Yes, that'll really show the brits how great we are. I can see it now, colonialism Irish style, defeat and occupy the peaceful inhabitants of a tropical Pacific paradise roughly the size of Cork... some how it doesn't have that whole 'empire' feel to it.;) Besides, we'd make awful rulers, they're would be houses built all over the place!

Why is it called New Ireland if it wasn't discovered by or invaded by the Irish? Were they just running short of names?

Australia took control in 1914, in the early stages of World War I, and renamed the island as New Ireland. It became part of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea declared in 1921 by the League of Nations and administered by Australia.
