86 killed on the roads over Christmas, and over 900 arrested for drink driving!

The RSA paint a picture of Ireland being the worst country in Europe for crashes etc when we quite clearly are not.

No statistics ever back up this RSA assertion.

Pretty bad figures ..but Poland does have 10 times the population

    /Dons nerd hat/

Ireland population 4.5m. 18 road deaths last December (sourcel

Poland population 38m. 86 road deaths.

Ireland 1 death per 250,000 people.
Poland 1 death per 440,000 people.

    /Nerd hat off/

This occurred to me a couple of years ago when I lived in Spain. The figures are higher there too, but proportionally there wasn't much in it.

There's 200 a day killed in China so I suppose Polands figures are terrible

The comparisson I was trying to draw was that in Polish media it was "86 people dead, and next, the weather". Here, christ, I feel guilty even sitting in the car and turning the key by the time I'm finished listening/reading about the latest death.

As far as I could tell with my Polish, it was 86 deaths in a few days, not december. That changes the stats somewhat.

The RSA is only concerened with here though. What happens elswhere doesnt really matter. Reducing deaths in Ireland is what matters to people in Ireland.

Are you comparing like with like though guerito. The statistcs Paintdoctor provides is 86 road deaths in Poland over the Christmas period. Now granted everyone will no doubt have a different take on when Christmas starts, Tesco appear to think it starts in August or September but I am of the opinion it does not encompass the full month of December and is not over yet as we speak. As such if Paintdoctor is referring to Christmas as in the last 4 or 5 days to date then Polands road death statistics would seem to appear shockingly worse than ours. Sorry to be getting a wee bit overly pedantic about it but I think if we should start drawing comparisons we should be starting off with the same raw data;)

Why were they towing the line that we were the worst in Europe for years till recently, if only Ireland matters. Why bring Europe into the picture at all.

They way they drive over in Asia as a whole is crazy.

4 cars side by side into 2 lanes is very common.

    Scary at times

Hilariously bad. Although, at least herself's parents bought one which was dead already. We called to her cousins, who had their carp swimming around in the bath before execution :D

Ireland is obsessed with road deaths.

More people die from suicide, something should be done to combat this.

    Your information is incorrect.

Its 36 killed over the XMAS period in Poland

Check out the link dated 28/12/2009

86 were killed in the period 17th to 23rd August 2009 according to offical Police statistics, not during the XMAS period.

I have been to Poland and the main reason is speed and deangerous overtaking on poor quality road infrastructure.

To try and get people in Ireland to stop killign themselves and others.

Not really in the RSA's remit though is it?

Most of those were probably shot during car jackings though and just found on the road.:)

Well then the RSA should obviously tell us about our standing in the EU league table in the good times and in the bad.

We are now significantly better than the EU average and IIRC, in the top 5 or 6.

Back in 2001 we were at about the EU average but the authorities were telling us bold lies that we were much worse. Lies are lies. Plain and simple.

I don't know of any other country where every single road death is a national news issue.

I don't know of any other country where death notices (not just road deaths) are read out on the radio.

Not surprised to be honest. They drive like absolute maniacs over here.
