I'm thinking of getting one of these as my next car . It will be 01/02/03 in year subject to budget.

Here is an example I would be thinking of:

Anyone here own or have owned one?

Anyone any advise on them reliability wise. I've heard the turbo have a tendency to let go.

    Are their auto boxes reliable?

What are they like on MPG over their manual equivalent?

    Thanks

First off, that's a manual! I haven't owned one but have driven a few auto's - they are decent auto boxes in them and don't give a lot of trouble.

There was a change in engines in '01 (I'm pretty sure, someone else might correct me) which saw the 136bhp M47 engine being replaced with the 150bhp M47TU (technical update) so get the last 7 digits of the vin no. and check www.realoem.com to find out which one you are going to be looking at. The earlier engine is supposed to be the hardier of the two but there is a noticeable power gain in the newer engine which seems to be more prone to turbo failure as well as losing swirl flaps into the engine. Having said that, though, you may never have problems with a turbo. My wife has an earlier engined manual and the car is driving without fault with 110k on the clock. FYI, fuel consumption in a manual should see you getting about 600 miles out of a full tank (€50-60 to fill)

    (bump post deleted!)
Watch out for turbo failure - hopefully any you have looked at will be fine/replaced but AFAIK, if the car is well looked after (read frequent oil changes) then it should be ok.

The autobox should be fine but the fluid (despite the crap from BMW about sealed for life) will need to be changed (IIRC every 30-50k miles).

However, as with any car, it should be professionally inspected before buying - and make sure that any warranty is in writing!

Blown turbo only happens on the facelifted E46 320d from September 2001 onwards, there were 150bhp. The prefacelifted 320d with 136bhp didn't suffer from turbo failure.
