Advice on getting a Trek 7500 for a noobie?

Hitting the big 40 next week  and getting a bike as a birthday pressie with a view to getting fitter.

Went in to the Bike Shop in O'Connell Street Limerick and liked the look of a Trek 7500. Will be mainly used on country roads/lanes and maybe a little bit on forest trails nearby.,

Any advice on this choice of bike?

I get the impression reading this forum that people often regret their first choice of bike, but I'd prefer to buy something that will do me for a while and not simply be discarded after a few months.

I am not sure too many people really regret their first bike. You need to start somewhere, and often it's that first bike that gets you hooked on cycling, and you then want to move on to something better.

I started with a Trek 7.6 hybrid a couple of years ago, and it was absolutely fine for my (quite long) commute. I upgraded most of the components and even did the Wicklow 200 on it earlier this year.

However, I reached the stage where I thought if I wanted to progress I really needed a road bike, and therefore got one just over 6 months ago. However if I had started out on a road bike, it would have been a quite basic one, I would still have ended up upgrading. There is no way I would have paid the amount I did on my road bike when I started out.

The one you are looking at seems a reasonable compromise if you want to do some trailing. However, be warned - this sport is addictive, and you will probably eventually end up with both a mountain bike and a road bike.
