Why is cocaine and heroin illegal?

I ask myself why is cocaine and heroin illegal? Because they are dangerous? Did you know more people in America die from OD:ing on prescription drugs than OD:ing on heroin and cocaine?
    http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2009-09-30-drug-overdose_N.htm

So can anyone please tell my why cocaine and heroin are still illegal when other legally prescribed drugs kill more people? It cannot be over health concerns that these drugs are illegal.

I would assume it is more to do with the detrimental social affect a drug like heroin causes on society rather than the physical danger it poses to the user. It is not often you see homeless addicts threatening people with syringes to get money for another Valium tablet.

Well some psychiatric drugs have been known to cause aggression so should we ban these drugs to?

I don't think any substance should be banned myself. I think the government should try rid the demand for these drugs through education, schemes, fighting poverty etc. Obviously that not going to happen overnight but it is clear that outlawing drugs is highly ineffective.

I do agree with you that cocaine and heroin should not be illegal. I just think it's strange that they ban some dangerous drugs, yet allow other drugs that prove to be dangerous.

SLUSK, continue with your anti-psychiatry crap and you'll be permanently banned from this forum. If you really feel the need to have the debate do it here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=392

It is not welcome or relevant in this forum.
