New Years Eve dilemma

I've been in a long distance relationship for the last few months and we both really like each other but with work etc. coming up to Christmas we haven't seen a whole lot of each other. Today he told me that friend of his is having a family/house party for New Years eve and he wants me to go with him. I would love to but the only thing is I had already planned to go shopping with a few friends I haven't seen for a while that day and we have a family party that night. As he is up in Meath I would have to cancel everything to travel up and I'd feel really bad about that as it was planned for a while. I think though, that if I say this he will think I'm just blowing him off. Also, I wouldn't really know anyone at the party except him. Would I be a really terrible g/f if I told him I couldn't go?

You have a relationship and I imagine your friends wouldnt mind if you missed the shopping or that after a few drinks your family will miss you at the party. Thats just excuses. Do you really want to go?

So do you want to spend the New Year with him or with family and friends. Which do you want to do??

Just explain the situation to him as you've done here. Tell him you had these plans made for a while and organise to meet up in the new year for a night out. Reassure him that you do want to see him but you can't blow off your mates at this late stage and you are expected to be at the family party.

It doesn't make you a bad girlfriend at all.

Is this the first opportunity to meet his friends? If so, I imagine it is important to him, and I think you should go.
