    Hi,

To all you knowledgeable people on this forum.

My elderly parents are looking to get a new car to replace their currect Nisan Quasqui 1.5 Diesel manual transmission car.

They like the Quasqui, as easy to get in & out for older people (not too low), with good road visibility, but prefer to switch to an automatic, as changing gears is getting hard, for long journeys etc.

    Their preference is a
    • New
    • Diesel
    • Tax class A or B, would consider C if no suitable ones in other tax classes
    • Automatic transmission.
    • Good safety rating (NCAP etc)
    • Similar to quasqui if available, else would consider a medium sized standard saloon or hatchback

Quasqui seems to only do a 2.0D auto, so too high a tax class.

Checked the Toyota Auris, they do a 1.4 or 1.6 D2D, however only do they MultiMode, not full auto. I believe that these types of of transmission require driver to adapt to a slightly new type of driving.
The Avensis offers a full auto, however, engines seem too large, as start at high tax class.

I've seen the Skoda Octaviia have a 1.6Diesel automatic (Tax Class B), so that can go down on list.

    Anyone know of suitable alternatives?

    Cheers!

The Skoda Yeti can be had in automatic diesel too I think. Higher up so may be easier to get in and out of

    Budget??

Bear in mind the Qashqai is probably worth a good bit less than you might think.

Golf Plus 1.6 TDI DSG is in Band A

Multi-Mode isn't that difficult really. it's still just the 2 pedals.

Prius...would they think of one of them? The new one is getting good reviews.

Benz A200 CDI is in band C, just make sure it's not the Turbo which is in band E.

    Honda Jazz 1.4 I-Shift - Band B

Citroën C4 Picasso EGS is Band B

they are selling the quasqui to my sister, buying anew one, trading in sister's old car for scrappage.

    Budget is ~€20k or less.

The Prius is a simple and easy to use automatic, and the tax is for peanuts too.
The new Toyota Prius has an 1800cc petrol engine but the lowest possible tax band.

This is about right spec wise. Unfortunately prices start at €25k for the auto =DSG I presume). VW offer very little kit in their standard builds, so could be quite expensive.

Maybe they will offer some price reductions in coing weeks

The Golf Plus - are they bigger space wise - VW.ie website is pretty bad at telling what the difference between the standard gold & the Plus is!

Are the Jetta models pretty much same as a Golf, except a saloon rather than hatchback, as VW seem tyo have loads of different models of cars currently.

read some reviews on the web. seems to be either love it or hate it. my parents would like something easy to drive, so standard auto I think is all that woudl be suitable, I expect. A prolonged test drive woudl be the only way to be sure I suppose.

woudl consider one, but price is still high, starting at €26k.

Just checked the car scrappage scheme. New car needs to be in Tax Band A or B to qualify. I wonder can the A180 or A160 be fitted with the automaatic gearbox?

This is a possibility, thanks. cost starts at €16k

Also noted that there is a Civic Hybrid available, at €24k. Have heard nothing about it yet. Worth a look for parenets maybe.

not sure if my dad will go for a Citroen. Likes to stick with the japanese cars usually. Not cheap either, as starts at €25k.

Will have parenets take a look at some of the siggested ones. Thanks again for the help!!

Just looked it up for you.

25-27k Euro's, depending on spec inc VRT discount, but well worth it.
The car will last 20 years.

The Golf Plus is to the Golf what the C-Max is to the Focus or the C4 Picasso is to the C4. Just a bit higher off the ground than the ordinary car.

As for the Prius, could probably save in economy what would be spent in outlay.

The Octavia is tax Class A AFAIK, nice 7 speed DSG box too.
Edit, the manual is Class A, the DSG is just into class B, there's a typo on the Skoda PDF sheet for the estate model which gives the CO2 as 123g but €104 road tax, the saloon figures tally for both CO2 and tax.
