    Hi there:)
I moved abroad to do a university course nd Im loving it. The people are great nd I like the course.
The problem is we are a very close knit group of students. The university is tiny, theres only about 12 in first year and only about 40 students overall. WHen I came first I knew no one so naturally I hang around with the other students.
I still dont know anyone in the area, apart from those from the uni.
I like there company really and I enjoy our nights out etc but I think I really need some space from them.
We all basically live together so none of us can even sneeze without the others knowing. And this is most of the time a good thing.
Now I've tried going out on my own etc to meet people I've joined a club or two and I've gone to a couple of live music nights, but every time I want to go out it feels wrong not to invite one or two others to come. Or else they find out I'm going and come along(well I cant stop them can I)
They are very clingy particularly my room mate.
I thought about finding something to do that none of the others would be interested in but it doesnt work.
I do get time away from them, I go for walks and stuff on my own. But I would really like the opportunity to socialise without them there.
Its a fairly small town and its a good 2 hour drive from anywhere else worth going so my options are limited anyway.
I want to find a women without the rest of them being there and watching what I'm doing from the sidelines aswell.
I really dont know how to lay a boundary without being a prick. Its nice that we're all so close and everything but its sometimes really not my cup of tea at all.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Good for you for moving outside the schoolmates. Fair few people, especially studying abroad, do so.

That said, why can't you meet new people with them around? Is it that they don't socialize well? Or that they are massive gossips?

Yo go to a live music event, your roommate tags along. Just start talking to the people standing/sitting next to you. Best is if it's a couple of people and you can introduce yourself around and introduce your flatmate around and he can start talking to them as well.

The year moves on, social circles expand, and it becomes less of a problem.
