Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Just saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on RTE this afternoon and taught it wasn't a patch on the original.

It completely lacked the charm and wonder that the orginal had in abundance, the acting by the kids was weak esp charlie, the dialogue was cringeworthy full of clichés, Johnny Depp's portrayal was creepy, David Kelly looked like a corpse and acted like one.

The CGI was OTT, "the" oppa luppa's would have looked more at home in a horror movie.

Maybe i'm just being nostalgic for the 1971 movie, but this recent version just did nothing for me:(.

The original had heart, this one tried too hard to be funny and it just killed the spirit of the film. Also Gene Wilder was weird but in a charming way, Depp was just plain weird.

They're both pretty bad, but the newer one was closer to the book, Wonka is meant to be a wierdo, I'm just sick of Tim Burton in general tbh, his stripes, warped trees and kooky visuals are tired byond belief, have no real desire to see Alice In Wonderland aside from the 3D aspect

I get that Burtons Chocolate Factory was more in with the darkness of the book, but I still prefer the Gene Wilder one.
I like some of Tim Burtons stuff, but sometimes it's too much 'Tim Burton' and not enough of the actual film, which is what's putting me off Alice in Wonderland, all I can see when I look at trailers is 'ooh look its Johnny Depp acting all Tim Burtony in some... movie called... something.. probably Tim in Wonderland'...

Agreed and the music was ****. And Willy Wonka was a bit too close to Michael Jackson for my liking.

While I prefer the original the new one does have some good points. Well three good points
    • Charlie's house/family was much better done
    • The Willy Wonka back story
    • The tinge of darkness

Just about to post the same re: Jackson

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Good reviews!!!! I don't think I've ever met someone who has preferred the Depp version.
