    Hi,

I'm all new to this whole iPhone thing and very confused!!!

Basically, I want to get an iPhone and unlock/jailbreak it.

I've been reading through threads and I'm very confused about this week 40 thing...what exactly does it mean?!

If I buy the phone on pay as you go, can I just go and jailbreak it straight away when I get home and do I have to sign up to any sort of O2 contract with pay as you go?

    Thanks for the help!

You can just jailbreak it, which means you can use third party software and themes.

"unlocking" it refers to opening it up to use with any mobile network. You can get this done safely in a few shops in Dublin (and probaly a lot of places outside Dublin!)

Sorry to tag onto this thread but I was just wondering if it's possible to use songs as your ringtone when you've jailbroken the iPhone? Also what's the main differences between the 3g and the 3gs? Is it just the camera on it? I heard that it's possible to update the software in the 3g so that it's the same as the 3gs

And can I get the phone in o2 without having to sign up to any contracts or packages etc?

No, ringtones are very specific Apple files. I wouldn't bother.

The camera is hardware. As such it can't be upgraded. There are apps that make the camera look better but its basically the same file. The 3GS is the best camera by far in the iPhone range, but rubbish compared to any other phone on the market.

No, not in Ireland. I think you can in Spain however. Factory unlocked models are from Apple only and you must be a developer.

Why go to the expense? eBay has iPhones ready to go for less than the O2 price. Plus when you unlock etc you need to get a huge data plan to run it. It is NOT cheaper to buy from O2 and unlock it. The iPhone is a data heavy device and needs the plan to match.

Plus, Vodafone is bringing the iPhone 3GS to Ireland VERY soon

Apart from the expense, I can go and buy a PAYG iPhone and jailbreak it and unlock it for Meteor yeah? I'm on Meteor Bill Pay and have the €15 unlimited data package for Bill pay.

Yes you can. This is the plan I use for my iPhone.

    But remember you need to:

    Unlock
    Jailbreak
Configure the iPhone to use the Meteor settings

And with that all that, you'll void your warranty. You'll also be at least one or two firmware dates behind and I'd say eventually iPhone's will become nigh impossible to unlock (Take Nokia as a case in point. Used to be very simple but now its very hard to do)

I have an unlock V1 iPhone on Vodafone and love it, but would actually prefer to use it with a genuine iPhone network (If the price is ever right! :) )

Personally, I would wait six months and see what Vodafone do. Tesco in the UK have the iPhone now. So if we get some competition in the market, things could get very competitive.

erm i'm using the latest firmware 3.1.2 on meteor at the moment with few to no problems at all.

my youtube app won't work over wifi/3G but m.youtube.com will work so it's a bit of a non issue as i rarely used the youtube app anyways.

it's unsure when the next firmware is actually due but when it does drop it will more than likely show where the holes are in 3.1.2 and allow that to be jailbreaked properly (without a thethered jailbreak).

YouTube is one of the factors why I want the iPhone, a few people seem to be having issues with it. Getting unsure about it now :(

You can do it easily with or without jailbreaking the phone, there is a thread on it here:

If you've actually used the YouTube app you'd realise that m.youtube.com is better than using the app.

I'm sure there's a fix for it. Then again this may not happen to everyone.

I find the app works perfectly on 3G, apart from lowish quality (I'm not unlocked or jailbroken)

To be honest, if you just want YouTube I wouldn't recommend the iPhone. Yes, its got a great browser and the App's are cool but on the grand scale of things its about 2 years behind the rest. Compared to a N97 it's terrible.

I have a N97 and an iPhone (1st Gen), and I'd think twice before buying another iPhone. I use both daily. Side by side there are huge differences:

N97 is a much better camera
    N97 does YouTube quite well
    N97 has a full keyboard
N97 has much better internet protocols availiable (3.5G etc)

And the decider? The N97 is cheaper.

On the flip side, the touch screen, battery life and the App's are better on iPhone. But sadly thats really it. And it won't be long until the iPhone touch screen becomes available market wide (Check out HTC's new range)

I'd sit down and really think why you want one because if you want an all singing tech machine the iPhone isn't it. If you want a great media device, the iPhone isn't it. If you want an iPhone just for the sake of it, buy off eBay.

Ok so got it today, pre week 40 and got it jailbroken and unlocked so it's all good!

Question though: the internet speed is actually glacially slow to the extent that the phone keeps deciding to stop trying. Using the data settings not isp (won't do anything using isp settings).

i think its unfair to compare n97 to first generation iphone, compare it to 3gs.

I got mine 3gs just last sunday, and i am happy as a kid in candy shop, iphone is just solid, easy to use, amazing app libary and moust important thing for me: huga libary of amazing games... I still think that iphones browser cant be beaten yet...

And i was a real apple hater btw....

On contract or pay as you go? Still don't know if I should go for it or not, terrible difficult decision.

i got it on prepay, i wouldnt sign a contract for 18months!!! i dont know what will happen tommorow...

I was on limbo... I was fighting between iphone 3gs or n900. As you can see allready i choose iphone! And thats the best 520eu spent this year!!!

I am not saying that n900 is a bad phone, just iphone is really solid packadge now, it has less fuctions, but they are polished as diamond. Appstore is just amazing, specially if you are a gamer like me! I got powerfull pc, xbox360, ps3, psp, and i spend 75% of gaming time on iphone, its just so addictive lol.

Iphone is out for awile, so there is loads of stuff for it on web, you dont even need to jail break it to have fun with it.

If you whant to get one, just go and get one, i was stalling, allways finding excuse to not buy it, waiting for miracles... then mine misses just grabed me for EMmmmmm... ear? dragged me to o2 shop and forced me to buy it. Best purcase of the year!

N97 has better specs, but the iPhone beats it in UI and 3rd party applications.

If you don't care about not having loads of apps and a quick/easy UI, then go for the N97.

If your an average user who just wants a stylish phone, with average features and are amused by (mostly) useless apps, then go for the iPhone :)

Oh, and the N97's music/video player is fairly simple, nothing fancy. the iPod features on the iPhone are obviously much better.

well having loads og nice apps is really good on iphone, and there is loads of really good ones, ( the ir crap stuff aswell). Iphone is not for an avarage user, its just for user, who needs phone in first place then a toy. I still cant see nokia beat it on browser, apps variaty, quality of music and video, multitouch screen. for me simple things are the best.

Thought you cant argue about taste... i was apple hater, but then i just got iphone, and i changed mine opinion... Ill repeat myself: it has less stuff maybe, but what it does have, is polished as hell!

But its lacking some basic phone functions, Camera Zoom and text forwarding are ones that come to mind, when your paying such a high price for a phone, you expect it to have the basics covered.

On paper, most new phones beat the iPhone, its specs are that of a phone that came out ~2 years ago.

Without the UI and App store, the iPhone would be a budget phone.

You can forward texts on an iphone 3gs

and on the other versions too.

A lot of people weighing in on this thread that appear not to have a clue.

My point is still somewhat valid though, the feature was only added later on in a firmware update

your point is valid about camera zoom but not about forwarding messages.

doesn't matter if they were about a year late with the function, the main thing is you're comparing the 3G S with another phone. both phone has the feature now so it can't be used as a down side to the 3G S :pac:.

alot of people comparing new phones with old genreration iphones... 3gs has moust of functions now...

Everyone were b*tching about iphone not able to do even basic multitasking... Honestly... i newer had any trouble... i was playing some game, and sms came in, i didnt even needed to quit game to answer it... If i close browser, it just stops on mine last visited webpages, so i can return there any time...i quit game fast, and then i return to the same spot where i was withouth even save... Its not multitasking like windows, but it does whant needs to be done withouth fancy looks...

Iphone is a good phone, just people like to bash it... And alot of times stuff being said about them from people who newer even holded device in hand...

It is a phone, not an internet tablet with ability to do calls!
