hypersensitive new filling

hey guys, i wonder if anyone can give me some advice on what to do here.

i went to see my dentist on tuesday, it was the first time in a good few years as "the fear" kept me away. i wasn't having any trouble, i just heard this giant crunch in my mouth a couple of weeks back and then a couple more crunches and was worried something might be wrong with my filling that i got when i was a child.

so he looked at it and said the old filling had leaked and needed to be replaced. so he put in a white one, it was very deep he apparently had to clean out decay right down to the nerve. he also put a little seal on the tooth behind it. it was a bit traumatic lol.

so anyway that was last tuesay, it's now saturday and i'm having really really bad pain in the tooth :( it's hypersensitive, hurting when i go out in the cold, sometimes when i'm breathing in and out, not really when i'm eating though, but it only seems to be getting worse so i'm starting to panic a little.

i've been taking neurofen every couple of hours, but yesterday evening it was just barely keeping the pain at bay. then i discovered the miracle of rubbing colgate sensitive on the tooth and that really helped, but i feel at the moment that it's not working as well as it was - hence my being up at this hour on stephens day! i just couldn't lie in bed with the pain any longer. i've since taken more neurofen and am distracted by the net so it's not feeling as bad.

so i'm wondering what to do here, should i go back to my dentist? i know that it should be quite sensitive as there was a lot of work done on it, so perhaps i should give it a chance to calm down a bit first? it has only been a couple of days afterall, and i do tend to over worry on stuff like this.

i know the amount of sugar i've eaten over the last couple of days can't be helping it (there's just so much chocolate around at the moment lol) and i also know i'm prone to lows & panic when i have sugar crashes or early in the morning so that's probably adding to my sense of panic right now lol :D

my dentist is up in dublin, i'm at home with the folks in tipperary for christmas. should i be calling him on monday for an appointment or checking if there's an emergency service in the office? honestly the pain is awful, but maybe i should just give it a chance to calm down after the terrible time my poor tooth had on tuesday!

sorry for the delay in replying, is it still painful? should hopefully have settled by now!
if it's woken you at night then it may need another look at it, but if the toothpaste is making a difference it may just need more time.

hi ballsymchugh, thanks for your reply.

it's all ok now, the pain only continued to get incredibly worse to the point where neurofen plus wasn't even doing anything! so i found an emergency clinic on the monday after christmas down in tipperary and they sorted it out.

the tooth with the filling was fine and the sensitivity settled down grand, but it was the tooth behind with the new seal on it that was causing the major pain. the seal was too high and was causing my back top and bottom molars to clash together oddly and every time they touched even slightly it caused major pain. so the dentist just shaved a little off it and i swear it was like instant relief!! it took a couple of more days to settle down fully, but it's all ok now :)

it certinaly hasn't helped my dentist fear though, he wants to put one or two more seals on other teeth, but after that experience i must admit that i'm very wary about going back to him.
