    Hi

I think I can help with this as I had the exact same problem yesterday. Sorry if the reply comes too late though...

If your using an Eircom Netopia WiFi router with standard settings do as follows.

1 -You should make a note of the SSID (network name) of the WiFi network you want to connect to then on your DSi delete the original connection and start again.
2 - Select "Manual Setup" and enter the SSID, now enter the security setting (WEP) and code.
3 - When it comes to IP Address check "No" and enter "detailed Setup".
4 - Your IP address should be a unique final 3 digits in the 192.168.001.??? scheme (I used 192.168.001.031), remember to enter the zeros, Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.000, and your gateway will be 192.168.001.254
5 - Now enter the "detailed Setup" on the DNS page. I entered the same address as the gateway (192.168.1.254).
6 - Save that and try testing the connection.

If you've changed any of the Eircom routers main settings (IP Address range etc) you'll have to adjust the settings accordingly, but basically you want to MANUALLY set the DSi to an IP address thats not in use on your WiFi network

    Good Luck

My kids DSI has been connecting to the Web with trouble - we setup a new connection, punched in our WEP key and hey presto. HOWEVER, he keeps telling me there is another WIFI feature on his DSi that wont connect. Im not totally sure what this is. He tells me certain games like Pokemon require access to WiFi to be able to connect with other players online. This doesnt appear to be possible via the Internet Connection we setup for him on the DSi. Does this make sense to anyone?
Im wondering what is the definition of WiFi by DSi standards, is it asking that I remove the security from my Eircom Netopia router and make is open to all Wifi? Sorry but Im stumped. Or does he need to by some sort of 3rd party hardware USB plugin for his DS or something??

Any help greatly appreciated as he has my heart broken. :o

There is a wifi connection setting within the pokemon game, click on that, it will usually show you the connection you already have made for browsing the web etc. If you have successfully got wifi on your dsi, there (I dont think) is any need to set up an alternate connection. Nintendo WFC will then usually say it treats your DS and the game as a set, ok to continue?

Once you accept the settings its normally straightforward enough, it tests the settings and saves the details to the card for next time you play.

Certainly doesn't need a usb plugin.

Oh, and WEP is apparently easy to hack, a lot of users on here advise that people use WPA (I think).

Funky Youtube vid here may explain what you need to know.

You need to save your connection as one of the first 3 connections if you want DS games to pick it up.
In other words, you can only use WEP if you plan on using your DS games online.

Thx for the help guys but Im still not making progress.
from what i can see there seems to be an issue with the settings on the Netopia Router. Im going to have to spend more time figuring out how to adjust its config. Ill keep you folks informed if I make any progress. Damn technology

whats the other wifi feature that won't work?

If you've set up a new connection that connected just fine (all green and no error code) ...then it should all work \:

Is there an error code with this 'other' feature?

OK, we had the DSi connected to our Netopia Router (with WPA enabled), but that has somehow gone, and even when we delete all Connections (1-6) we cant add it again.

So I followed the link provided above and started at the very beginning all over again.

When I get as far as actually finding the Wireless Network, it tells me I can only connect to it via Advanced Setup. That automatically takes me to Connection slots 4-6 and advises "Allows use of high security proxy settings, Cannot be used with Nintendo DS-Compatible functions. So while I can try trouble shooting this to get us back to where we were before, its clear now the WPA connection means my son is right, he cant play many of the DS game connections over Wifi. BUT - Im very reluctant to remove my Privacy Setting protection with WPA as we use this connection for business. Surely there is another way no?

Sorry just to update I did get the secure connection (Connection Slot #4) setup again over WPA, but still really want to get the less secure connection which opens up more online play options for his games. Anyone?

DS can only connect through WEP encryption. WPA will NOT connect....even with advance set-up. And thats' the problem. He can't even connect to the ei-fi to play online.

WEP is still safe. So I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You can look to buy the Nintendo USB Wi-Fi.. nintendo-wi-fi-usb-adapter-hands-on-20051107014430936-000.jpg
Which only allows the DS or the Wii to connect. However they aren't being manufactured anymore, so finding it may be difficult.

There are other makes but as far as I know they will allow access to anything. Still, if you're worried about security..Your son can disconnect that whenever he's fineshed. And many only allow one connection at a time.

thanks a million looking_around, I did a quick search and found this article on WEP, which advises against it.
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055153550&page=16

Because we run a business from home I need to be certain of its security and reading that made me think its pretty bad. Maybe the usb key is the answer? So does that USB simply plug into the DSi and then that allows it to connect to the router or vice versa? Again, thanks for all your help.

Nope..usb..plugs into the pc.... (have to set up a home network) and the DS can then "find" the USB key and connect to the internet through it...

And right..didn't know you had a business..for average home users WEP is safe enough

    For starters
The Nintendo DSi & Nintendo DSi XL are designed work on WPA or WPA 2 not WEP

Nintendo DSi & Nintendo DSi XL - Getting Connected Online - At Home with a High-Speed Internet Connection and Wireless Router using "Advanced Setup"

This the way Ive setup my DSI XL to my router to the internet. I went into system settings by clicking on the wrench icon. and select "internet" option, enter my pin code, then this page came up
    settingsInternet2.png

    then selected I "Advanced Setup"

    settingsInternetSFAP.png

    then selected I "Access Point"

Then you pick your router server for example, I picked my 1 which is my internet provider is upc, so I picked my upc router and typed in the password and then I was connected.

and info can also be read by step by step from this link

actually changing over to WEP caused all sorts of grief for laptops, itouch etc on the Wifi so had to revert back to WPA. So ordered one of the USB keys, arrived today so need to install drivers etc now. Will let you know how it goes. Thx again.
