JA/Casual work

Hiyas, claiming jobseekers allowance since my hours got reduced to 2 days a week. Simple enough formula, €114 is taken off me for the days work and I get €90 per week.

Two weeks ago work asked me to do two half-days and a full day, so I'd do the same hours but have it spread over 3 days.

Filled this in on the casual labour form, attached a letter explaining I was still only working 14 hours a day even though it was over 3 days(which means I should have gotten roughly €114 or so).

Lo and behold, I only get €33 because as far as they're concerned, no matter what I say, they're taking €57 off me per day regardless. Phoned them up and was told:

"Your employer should have paid you more for working the third day"
"But it was two half days and a full day so it was only the same hours/wages"
"You should take that up with your employer, we have you set up on the system so €57 is taken off your JA for each day you work"
"Can I come down with my wage slip and show that I only earned the same amount?"
    "Sure, you can try that."

What the hell like, is there some recourse if they refuse to give me the extra that I'm owed?

im afraid im no help but i would be grateful to anyone who can advise u with this as i had recently posted a thread on here looking for advice on a similar matter, still unresolved though. this is very helpful to me though so thank you.

i completely agree with you, this makes no sense. i have been offered 3 hour days next week but ill actually loose out on money if i take them... i know i should take any work going but its hard to motivate yourself to do that when you actually loose money by taking it.... they should have a system that allows us to put it down as half day

sorry but no way they will give you money back, its based on days worked not hours, they class half day as full regards benefit, cause you were not available for work as you were working.rotten system.

thanks for clearing that up, i agree its a bad way of working that out..... it will just discourage people from9 taking work when it isnt worth it , especially where in my case i would LOOSE money :(

That makes no sense, it's not based on hours - thats fine, but it's based on income.

My income is being spread over 3 days, therefore I get paid less per day, and get more JA.

How else can it be construed?

    Yes, it's balmy.

Even worse, if doesn't take any account of income. A highly paid professional (say an week) may make more in two days than many employees will make in a week. But if they're on short-hours, they will still get JB/JA for the other days of the week.

Complain to your TD: they don't be able to fix your problem, but they should be trying to fix the system.
