The Descent or Dog Soldiers are cool, both done by a Scottish director Neil Marshall. Not zombies but pretty close.

Try John Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy"; The Thing, Prince of Darkness and In The Mouth of Madness. No zombies though.

Interesting alternative title, that has no zombies or horror, but a heavy end of the world focus :)

    Junk
Its kinda cheesy but enjoyable enough.

    Stacy
    As above.

    Bone Sickness
Independent horror flick from the states.A new spin on the zombie genre with some good gross scenes.

    Versus
This movie kicks all kinds of ass.Its got zombies, yakuzas and has an apocalyptic theme. Its outstanding.

Really? Better than El orfanato, [rec], Martyrs?

It's definitely different, but representative on an entire decade of horror... wouldn't even be in my top 100 tbh.

    EDIT:

I highly recommend against that film. I'm shocked you even like it, it's one of the very worst zombie films I've seen in my life.

    Really?
Obviously its not near say Romero's original trilogy or even some of the lesser known Italian cheese fests but I thought it was fairly ok.Some of the SFX were pretty cool too, especially considering its low budget.

zombieland!! bill murray need i say more!

You could say a lot less for anyone who doesn't want the surprise ruined.

    28 Days Later
    28 Weeks Later
    Shaun of the Dead
    Dawn of the Dead Remake

The two 28 films are fantastic. The second one isn't Danny Boyle but it's still great.
It only sort of fits the criteria but I watched Pandorum recently not expecting much and I thought it was great.

You watched the same film I did, right? The SFX were some of the most dire I've ever seen, they used a shop mannequin in some sequences as far as I remember. It was almost as bad as that turgid Day of the Dead remake.

    pontypool was pretty bad :)

gona try one of the others!

I think its just one of those "so bad its good" movies for me.

And you are correct on the mannequin, come on,you gotta give them props for trying it!
    :D

Ah fair enough, I suppose it could be lumped in the "so bad it's good" pile.

I wish someone had given them props during filming though. ;)

How did that ruin any surprise any quick check of the film on any review website or website like imdb lists bill murray as being in it , and since i didnt mention his charecter, story , or plot then im pretty sure that didnt ruin any surprise .

As much as I do love, El Orfanato, Martyrs and [rec], Pontypool is far more original than all three. It's such a simple yet brilliantly executed idea which features one of the best performances of the year.

Have to agree, it was a pretty poor film and I was drinking when I watched it. The FXs were amongst the poorest ever committed to celluloid though that being said it is superior than the day of the Dead remake. Vegetarian zombies, ffs.

although a ton of people hated them, i loved the resident evil movies so far.

cant wait for the 4th film next year.

A film called Carriers. Been meaning to watch it but haven't got around to it yet. Its end of the world type film.

Also although its not particularly good, Blindness is another apocalypse movie in which the whole worlds population goes blind.

Yeah they aren't that bad. The first 2 weren't the best if I'm being honest but I think they definitely improved the series with the 3rd.

The CG film, Resident Evil: Degeneration is also very good. Although, it's more in line with the games so you'd probably need to of played them to understand the characters.

Almost forgot to mention, it wasn't really my cup of tea but if you like your Zombie films to verge more on the comical than serious then check out: Dance of the Dead

My favourite end of the world type flick is Mad Max 2.

    Not a zombie flick though.

+1 to Rec which was said earlier. Creepy as fcuk!

Alien Abduction; Incident in Lake County http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0142074/ I thought this was quite a scary movie

Last night! Great flick! Sarah Polley reminds me of Uma Thurman for some reason, a mini Uma of sorts.

Suicide club is a pretty messed up Japanese film about an epidemic of suicide cases across the country. The opening scene has a bunch of school kids holding hands, gleefully jumping onto train tracks, getting blood everywhere. As the suicides get more frequent, a creepy end of the world feeling starts to develop.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0312843/

Probably one of the most creepy films I have ever seen.

'I Am Legend' is a great film, very underrated in my opinion.

If you can get a copy of it The Quiet Earth is pretty good in a weird kind of way or what about Night of the Comet or Night of the Creeps ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,987 ✭✭✭Auvers

have you seen Zombie flesh eaters it was classed as a good auld video nasty back in the day and was cut in places for the UK\Irish markets but if you can lay your hands on an uncut copy its well worth a watch.

it looks rather dated now but it might be a laugh with a few mates

This list breaks it down by cause of catastrophy.

I know you specifically said film and posted it in the film forum but there's nothing like the feeling of bleakness you get when reading World War Z which is now on audiobook.

Just found this free preview: http://www.randomhouse.com/audio/podcasts/world_war_z_rss.xml
