Iphone 3g (8gig) lines across the screen

I picked up the iphone 3g back in March of this year on PAYG from o2.
Recently the phone has been developing black lines that run across the screen. like this but a bit worse http://i27.tinypic.com/b3tswp.jpg

I’m just wondering if anyone has experienced this problem before here and how did they get on with the problem getting solved.
The phone has a one year warranty and this problem is pretty common (google), so i was wondering do i need to contact apple directly, if so dose that mean i could visit the Belfast store (uk) with my irish bought phone and ask them to fix/replace it. Or is it best to pop into the 02 store where it was purchased.
Also if the phone is being sent off do they normally give you a replacement iphone?

BTW i didn’t take any insurance out on the phone. And passed experience’s with 02 customer care have not been great.

I have a similar problem with my 8gb Iphone, I brought it back to my local 02 Store, and a few days later I got a new one!

    Hope this help.
