2 inches of snow in Clonmel, started snowing 20 minutes ago and as soon as it did traffic just stopped moving.
Right I know many people have never even seen snow let alone drive in it but why stop completly?
Are there any good drivers besides all of us on boards.ie!!!!!!!

Bad drivers at the best of times.

Never mind rain snow or frost.

Snow in January had people doing singles kph on the clear roads.

hey OP...I know someone intending to travel to Cork tonight..by any chance have you heard anecdotally even, how the motorway is that part of the country? I've checked AA auto site but doesn't mention Clonmel..

    Many thanks in advance..:)

I'm not down there at the moment, but the motorway is a bit west of Clonmel, you might be ok.

My wife tells me that there was absolute chaos this evening around Clonmel bypass.

I drove from cork to Cashel today no problems on the motorway

Some people just cannot drive as it is.

Mostly they slide on their driveway and out of their housing estate so ASSUME every road is slippy so drive at 15kph on a simply wet national route holding everybody up to feck.

I was driving from Limerick to Clonmel and back today and met so many people doing 30 kph with full fogs on. No snow, no ice and no fog.

    Feckers!

Was pretty much the same story for me on the commute home from Limerick to Abbeyfeale on the M20/N21 this evening. A question for another thread I'm sure but whats with this crack of needlessly turning on rear foglights and insisting on burning the eyes out of the occupants in the vehicle behind. Quite a number of drivers were doing so this evening even though there was no fog whatsover.

    cars are sliding everywhere..
all around me, insurance claims forming..
    snow is falling..everywhere

    doo doo doo

sorry, am I the only one who sang the title? I tried to continue it but failed :P

Just came down the motorway from Cahir to Fermoy, 120 kph all the way...

Same here in Galway... people doing 20kmph on clear gritted roads and then heavy breaking in the corners..... imagine if there was ice.

Agree. I've seen some beauties around Galway today. There was one clown driving at about 30kph on the loughrea bypass (ruler straight, salted and 100kph limit) with the wipers going at full tilt, gripping the steering wheel as if he was on the edge of a cliff.

Oh, and the rear fog light on for good measure. FFS!

Tomorrow, have a look at the idiots coming towards you with a tailback behind them. The bewildered looks on their faces are priceless.

And for the record, the backroads are lethal in many places so it would be madness to drive as if it were July.

The muppets causing the hold ups on what are, effectively, damp roads are the problem.

Did Dublin - Limerick - Dublin today. Main roads were grand all the way. Still took 4 flipping hours down because of busiest christmas travel day and silly drivers. Mountrath took 40 minutes, and on the way back got stuck behind a numpty who dithered at about 40kph in between panic braking for about an hour.

There was the odd agressive out there too, there's no need for weaving at 120 when people are taking it handy at 100.

Fog lights?? Sure there's people driving around with them on in the summer, or just all the time. Presumably these people either don't know of its existence, or don't know what its for. Most strange, and they should be slapped. Tsk.

Strange thing, icy back roads of Kildare and speeds around 30-50km/h, salted main roads and people driving the same speeds, really annoying actually.

I actually have a theory that best Kildare drivers are those ones driving those smaller roads.

It's f***ing amazing the stanard of driving on the roads. Shocking. And complete disregard for anyone on the road but themselves. Driving at ridiculously slow speds, waiting for 10 seconds before taking off at a green light, running red lights, going into yellow boxes and blocking lanes, crawling along in the outside lane.... it's amazing how stupud and ignorant some drivers are. Every single day I see people doing shocking things on the road.

Would that even be 1 mile? journey should of been less than five minutes taking the 2 sets of traffic lights into account. I feel your pain:D:D

I passed some muppet yesterday evening on a perfectly straight stretch that was doing 10mph with all their lights on, overely careful people

I was driving through Clonmel and yesterday and it was alright on the bypass. Not the best mind you as the snow was lodging on the ground as people were driving on it but I had absolutley no control of the car at all. There was no traction between just outside Clonmel and nearly Cahir. Was crazy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,160 ✭✭✭✭Berty

Im sure we are all of the same mindset before somebody runs off to R*R for a good rant about us.

We APPRECIATE that they are either being cautious or frightened and none of us( I assume ) have flashed their lights or blown the horn because that would just be bad manners.

I would agree with you OP if we used winter tires in Ireland but we don't. I am just back from Germany where I was driving on 2 inches of compacted snow on the road but while it was still a bit slippery the tires made a big difference.

In Ireland it is different as we tend to have more ice and are less prepared with tires and we dont have as good snow plows etc.

What about the eejits on the M4 this morning before 6am one reversed into a lamppost at 100k+ whilst exiting and the other spun down the central median doing the shrubbery no end of good. Bet they thought the roads were fine after being salted and temp was +1c.

I agree with all the above posts their are some right special people on the roads this week.

Was one of them around the Celbridge interchange?

I was going to work about 7, came down that sliproad heading into Dublin and squad car, ambulance and Tow(my car to the scrapyard) truck all around a rather battered looking maroon primera (i think).

Having read all the comments above i agree thouroughly, but the outside lane of the N4 around lucan was quite slippy, don't think it was just wet, more like icy. Car slipped once or twice in it. M50 was grand though

Yup that was the tool. Happened before 6. Did every panel on the car in.

Didn't stop some Idiot from overtaking us all as we crawled along at 70k. Why would you ignore an accident due ice and every other indication that the road is bad and jump out into the outside lane an blast along at 120k+. They passed at least 20 cars in the driving lane. Visible ice and frost on their lane.

Drove Dublin to Waterford today - pretty straight driving, but like all of you, we experienced the 30-40 kph brigade, with fogs on who were tapping the brakes every few seconds. Crazy!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,160 ✭✭✭✭Berty

Limerick to Dublin. I would be a bit wary about the sections from Roscrea to the Motorway at Portaloise. The roads are pretty much covered on both sides by high sides ditches. Chance of frost and ice.

Fine until you have to brake.

I find cautiously doing the 120 on the straight motorway is fine tbh (going by just the look of the roads/checking the temp regularly etc).

But coming back there this evening on the more winding non-motorway sections , there was a fair few morons (mostly in 4 X 4's curiously enough).
    - Overtaking when it was clear no obvious overall progression could be gained.
    - Driving up the ar$e of other drivers (actually practically everyone was doing this- 1-2 car lengths probably, morons).

    I can't understand some drivers.
Normally i like to progress as legally expediently as possible (and have no time for the average outer lane under-the-limit morons etc etc) but the one thing i DO slow down for/rein in my overtaking is treacherous freezing conditions on winding roads (because of course it's the one thing that's partially out of your control- black ice etc).

So it really annoys me seeing these numpties oblivious to this.

    /end rant

had to grit the road myself to get out of donegal, nearly broke my neck in the process... 7 hours back as well. Love the snow

we have had some extreme weather conditions since I made my original post(last year)!
Had a few close shaves myself, was driving my mothers yaris going into a down hill housing estate when it lost traction, eased off the right foot, still skidding, turning wheel no different, gave it a touch of right foot and got it back for a second, Im nearing the end of the estate now and running out of road, cheapest car parked up is a 00 megane so im thinking if I have to hit something this is it Its gotta be the megane, So in a last ditch attempt to stop I stuck it in first pulled up hand brake slightly spun the car round and floored it.
It worked and I managed to stop within inches of the megane.
A bit of skill and a lot of luck was involved and a change of pants!

Had a few skids in the old tranny van as well but she is rear wheel drive which I find a lot easier to control in such conditions.More fun anyway.
I think we all have had our driving skills tested by the extreme weather conditions and Hopefully it has helped us to respect the roads we use and the effect mother nature has on them and us.

Happy new year one and all.

i misheard one of my colleagues earlier on.

He said the M7/N7 will be treacherous tmrw morning........ I heard it as tetris.

Cue 5 minute brain ramble about cars bumping into each other trying to create another full line across the road. with each bump a bunch of cars get pushed trhough newlands cross traffic lights....

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,641 ✭✭✭✭antodeco

Took me an hour to get home in what would normally be a 5 minute drive. Got to experience RWD in an S2000 and seems alot easier (and fun) to control!
