does anyone use this from opendns.org and if so what are the pros and cons. does it use a lot of resources?

OpenDNS is very popular. I'm not sure what you mean by resources, there are no resources on your end for it to consume.

Cons-wise, there is the redirect to a search page for a failed DNS lookup. It's a matter of preference on this.

Alternately you could use the Google public DNS servers at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

Unless you have an issue with your IPS's DNS server, there isn't really any need to switch. Your ISP's DNS server will likely have faster response times then services like Open DNS and Google DNS.

I've been using OpenDNS for months. Generally bit faster than ISP dns servers, and more secure. no problems like that time eircoms weren't working.

I wouldn't use google servers though, just for privacy reasons.

If you sign up for a free account for OpenDNS you can do some filtering too. Default protection is just from phishing sites. But can do filtering for child unfriendly sites.

Then again recent Eircom outages shows it's handy to have a backup just set your second DNS to another ISP so you have fail over

opendns gives a lot of filtering options so you can tweak what you block, very handy for businesses

if it can't resolve a name then opendns may show some ads,
then again Chorus NTL are doing this too

another one that's easy to remember is
    4.2.2.1 is Verizon

LOL at google 8.8.8.8 which all conspiracy nuts will know is trying to take over the world in a Nazi plot, the 88 symbolising Hitler

just Godwined a DNS thread \o/

Open DNS is the sh*t. It is faster has parental control functionality built in , has a new smart cache feature ,supports ipv6 , is way more secure than any Irish ISP DNS I would imagine following the eircom madness this year.

I mght sound a bit over eager I just likestuff that works well without muh effort.

    Happy Xmas Lads,

    Kevin..
