don't buy from a store if you can help it. they only sell crap. acer are good for laptops and reasonably priced the best i think if you are going to buy from a store. but if you want a good desktop or laptop then alienware sell the best. the reason why i say this is because alienware have the best cooling systems in these which will last alot longer than your average heated pc world computer. if you want it just for easy going stuff then you will get one cheap enough. thats just my opinion.

buy after christmas. should be some great sales then.

It all comes down to what you want to do gaming, encoding movies, Photoshop? Alienware is good you get all the bells and whistles but there a ripoff compared to others look at laptops from Sager Clevo Asus and Msi. Desktop replacements are heavy on battery life your looking at an hour and a half and desktop replacements are a pain to carry around.

of course it all depends on what you want it for and i only say alienware because you will get alot longer out of it with the cooling systems that are in both the expensive and cheaper ones. toshiba are very good as well but if it's for gaming they will all be expensive.

    lol.

Alienware = Dell. Dell's cooling systems are certainly not the best, even in their high end stuff. Plus you're paying about €1000 alone for the name.

OP, what's your budget and what are your intentions for the machine?

Alienware are Dell's gaming range. You buy from Dell.ie but they are well ovver budget in this case.

Clevo tend to be rebranded afaik. http://www.kobaltcomputers.co.uk/ are one such reseller (Sager notebooks are also Clevo rebrands i think although i've never come across them before). Also over budget.

Asus and MSI are pretty common. Both should be available in the bricks and mortars, although their netbooks are much more popular than the rest of their laptops.

Ignore all the advice above. You do not need anything like an Alienware or that. Unless you're willing to buy online, then just shop around, most laptops around the €500 margin will be able to to what you ask. If you're looking for a blu-ray player though things can get a bit pricey, but you can sometimes stumble across some decent deals on a Sony Viao with blu-ray. A Dell Inspiron would probably be my rec though.

dell own alienware but alienware still make their own computers. they are still made by alienware not dell. the cooling systems i was saying from dell and alienware are both totally different thats all i was saying they are expensive but i didn't know the o.p was going to spend 500.

That was the case after the initial takeover, but not now from what I understand.

Alienware and Dell are now pretty much the one. Since 2008 Dell have been 'consolidating' the brands because they ended up competing with their own subsidiary. Dell are getting rid of the XPS brand and will use the Alienware badge on their own gaming stuff. There was even talk of them getting rid of Alienware production facilities entirely earlier in the year although I don't know what came of it.

HD films are probably the most intensive task you'll be doing so make sure it can handle that. Not all laptops will, all laptops should handle everything else you were planning to do.
