    HBO orders Gervais's animated series

    By Mike Moody

HBO is developing a series based on Ricky Gervais's popular podcasts.

Gervais will be a star voice in The Ricky Gervais Show, a 13-episode animated programme due to premiere in early 2010, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Stephen Merchant, the comedian's collaborator, and friend Karl Pilkington will also give voice to characters.

The series will revolve around Pilkington's "musings".

The Ricky Gervais Show will premiere February 19 on HBO.
Cannot wait.. their podcasts are superb!

Plus more Karl Pilkington can never be a bad thing!

For those people who've never heard of Karl Pilkington.. enjoy!

    Dear Mr K Dilkington

Brilliant news! Listening to the XFM sessions for the third time round, the guy is a living legend :D

Dig the Ricky Gervais Show, I've listened to them all at least 3-5 times, including the 120-or-so radio shows. Can't wait to hear the Ricky Gervais Guide to the Future, which comes/came out today.

Unfortunately, they repeat material all too often. You could have cut the above video together from their previous shows very easily. It just highlights the fact that a lot of what they do is scripted, in spite of everything they say about Karl.

This aired last night.. started to watch it there but was a bit disappointed!

    From the OP:

I read "based on" to mean there would be at least some original content in there.. it's just audio lifted from the podcasts I've listed to a hundred times along animated characters and content.

And I think it just didn't work. Shame!

Yeah, gotta agree. Just finished watching Ep01, and although I already knew that it was just going to be the old podcasts with animation on it (there has been a preview clip on rickygervais.com for a few months now), I do think the animation actually takes away from the original podcast audio - which is amazing on its own.

It's a shame, as I wanted it to be good! The podcasts themselves are amazing, but I think part of that is the fact that you can picture the stories & scenarios yourself - it isn't hard. The animation just seems a bit pointless, and it actually distracts you from the story despite being a visual aid!! I found myself watching more than listening - and the podcasts need to be listened to!

The animated podcasts are very good, so this can only be good news.. Stephen Merchant doesn't half pull his weight in fairness. Look forward to this.

Animated podcasts? What are you talking about? The new HBO series?

Was referring to these. Only seen bits of previews. Didn't mean for any confusion!! I have been drinking all day.

Oh, okay. I was wondering how you could be looking forward to something you had already seen & thought was good!

    Yeah - see posts 5 & 6 - it was a bit disappointing.

Going on that clip, the laughter track as well as the animation ruins it.
I know when to laugh myself if it's my type of humor, I don't need a prompt.
Wonder who that was aimed at...............
Hope that was taken from a screening or something, and that is an audience reaction to it.

This amateur version looks much better........

There's no laugh track.. the clip above is from when Ricky Gervais was being interviewed on one of the late night panel shows during the week, and that was the clip with the late night show audience laughing at it.

It's a gimmick. The American public want more Gervais on screen, he's got nothing new TV-wise and he's agreed to it because it'll market the audiobooks to a whole new audience and earn him a ton. It's not really FOR die-hards. I suspect the animation is also to make the humour more accessible to American audience who mightn't 'get' British people chatting.

I watched the first episode and thought it was pretty good actually. Despite Ricky looking a little too much like Fred Flintstone.

The reason its refered to as 'based' on the podcasts is that they are lifting bits from different podcasts to make an episode rather than it merely being a podcast episode in full.
I hope they get to use the XFM stuff in the future. Practically all the best RSK moments were from the XFM series.

The first episode didn't "lift bits from different podcasts"..

I could have sworn I read that somewhere, either the blog or Pilkipedia.
I didn't notice, while watching anyway. Ah well, I stand corrected.

Just because you like Ricky, their is no need act all superior, so get of your horse oh wise one.
I haven't listened to the podcasts , but his TV work, films, and interviews have all been rubbish since thee second season of The Office, credit to him for making good money, its just a shame the output isn't up to much really. :P

I saw the pilot episode. Some of the videos on youtube are better in my opinion, i.e this one:

I'd love it if they used some of the XFM rockbusters on the cartoon... A Jamaican fella on the Titanic... Christ! De Berg :D

Just to note that this has been commisioned for a second season.

Definitely deserves it, has me cracking up for the full duration of every single episode so far.

I love it. I enjoyed the podcasts, but for me having the visual aspect to it makes it even more hilarious

never heard any of the podcasts and have to say i'm quite enjoying this. There's not really much too it, just a few blokes talking sh!te, which is a nice break from other serious shows.

Anybody watching this now? It's bloody hilarious. Karl Pilkington is some nutcase!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,206 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

    This isn't very good really.

Am up to date from the US.. and the show is actually great!

Yes.. it's bits from the old podcasts but it never fails to make me seriously gut-laugh at least twice each episodes!

If you like the TV version you should check out the podcasts and the old XFM show.

Karl Plikington is the funniest thing on two legs.

Sounds like 2 smartarses bullying a dullard. At least we should be thankful Gervais has taken his head out of a Hollywood celebrity's anus for a second

Cool, I really must download a few of their podcasts. Is Karl really that dumb or is it all part of the act. It's classic deadpan.

I don't think he's dumb.. it's more like he's naive and has an over-active imagination.

That plus he's an absolute legend!

Watched it on Channel 4 there, and Oh my God, it bored the hole off me.

Was never a big fan of Gervais and this did nothing to improve that.

He's no Frank Drebin. You would have to think he is playing it up for the purpose of story development but I'm not so sure. This show didn't do much for me. Take 3 students,a few joints of weed and a couple of microphones and you wouldn't be too far off content. That's not to say there isn't the odd gem but it's mostly rambling.

Bump.. this was back for a second season last night.
Topics for the second-season premiere include Karl’s pitch to a movie studio for a Rebecca De Mornay thriller; and entries from Karl’s diary about Australia, camping and visiting his girlfriend’s parents.

I reckon this might be a bit more popular now after Karl's exposure in 'An Idiot Abroad'.

Yeah, Ricky confirmed it in his blog.

And that the 4th season (if HBO want it) will have new material.

No apologies for resurrecting this thread, because this is just in ...

Karl Pilkington is to appear on an episode of The Simpsons.
It will come as the animated worlds of Springfield and The Ricky Gervais Show overlap in a future episode of the US series.
Writing on his blog, Gervais said: ‘He's excited about being on The Simpsons. I won't give the joke away but they are featuring a little clip of The Ricky Gervais Show in a future episode. He said, “Good that init?”

‘Trust me. That's him being over the ****ing moon.'
Gervais is currently editing the second series of An Idiot Abroad, in which he sends Pilkington to exotic locations around the world.

He wrote: ‘Finished a rough edit of Karl’s first An Idiot Abroad 2 trip. **** me what a whinging Manc twat. So, as I say, as good as the first series.’

Heard this on the podcast, this part with Rebecca De Mornay and Clive Warren is one of the funnest things I think I've ever heard, hilarious, well worth looking up..
