    One simple idea.

    Lack of belief in God(s).
The concept shouldn't even exist ffs.

You can still be an atheist and be a spiritualist.
You can still be an atheist and be buddhist.
You can still be an atheist and be Christian! (Bizarre I know- But If you follow Jesus..)
You can still be an atheist and be pro-life.
You can still be an atheist and be anti-life.
You can still be an atheist and be a pacifist.
You can still be an atheist and be anti-science.

    Hopefully that illustrates it.
One Simple idea : Lack of belief in God.

Well the whole deism thing complicates it a bit.

A theist is someone who believes in a personal intervening type of God, like Christians and Muslims for example.

So a person who answers "yes" to "Do you believe in a personal intervening God?" - is a theist, anyone giving any other answer to that question, be it "No", "Maybe" or "Wibble" is not a theist - hence an atheist.
