Just wondering if anyone knows do you need to have a dear hunting licence to buy a .22/250? I will only be using it for fox shooting and there are there are stray dogs around interferring with sheep. Has anybody any advice on the .22/250 as a caliber?

the cal is over rated and out dated and you will require a deer hunting licence or be a member of a range with fullbore faculty's.

If its just fox then go 223,

Or .204 ruger or .220 Swift ......... any of these will be perfect for what you want and no need for deer permit or range membership ;)

The .204 ruger out performs the .22-250 on foxes ,IMO ! ;)

You dont necessarly have to have a deer hunting licence or range membership for this cal(or any within reason so long as you have good reason for it) but if you think you might take up deer hunting at a later stage then maby a larger cal would be better,it's all been said before but fox's and possible occasional deer=something like a 243(maby you have already sourced 22/250?)nothing wrong with 22/250 for the job you mentioned either TBH
Or as Bunny said, zippy rounds..all and above ideal for dogs IMO!!

Thanks Guys, I have not got a .22/250 yet but i am thinking of getting one for varmint only, the local gun dealer said i would get one without a deer licence but he tends to go on a bit so I said i would ask here. The ballitsics on the round look impressive and out preform the .223 and are cheaper to run than the .220 swift

A lot depends on what your Super will licence too ;) Check with your FO he/she will know what you could expect to get a licence for

id just apply for a .223 not half as much hassle with the guards
    will kill foxes no doubt
the gun dealer is just trying to pawn off that gun to ya
not many using them anymore just like the hornets people are preffering the .223 cheaper rounds and every bit as effective

In our gun club i know of one who use a .22-250 for Foxs and he loves it, but i think its a little OTT, But if its at the right money and you like it who i`m to tell you whats what, Talk to your FO/Super and see what they think
