I was over by Carroll and Roche earlier and spotted one of these. I must say, it looks the business. Question is, would I have one over an Octavia RS? I know the Scooby is AWD as opposed to the Skoda's FWD, but there's a big price difference too.

I must admit though, this is finally a Subaru that i'd be interested in buying (excluding a WRX ;))

I drove this a few weeks back and was impressed by the car and the engine and the spec. I was a little to sceptical about the whole "boy racer" image about driving an Impreza.

I dont think that image is attached to the current model tbh. Lots of people wouldnt even know what the new shape Impreza is anyhow. Having driven a diesel Legacy, I know the AWD system works very well, and there is plenty of pull from the engine too.

Might be a car to look out for in a few years time with a lot of depreciation...

I love how everything comes back to Octavias!

New Impreza is a dogs dinner to look at, stick-on bits improve it though but still not a looker.

A least the price is better than the new Legacy.

The Legacy has one model and it has everything. Some people do not want AWD or all the goodies it has so the single price of €37,000 for the Legacy is stupid.

The Impreza is a good price though and the interior is a world away from the Legacy(current model not 2010).

The wheels on the attached pic above are rotten.

LOL I literally just received an e-mail from Subaru to take part in an Online Survey.:D

Its the HUGE boot space that does it for people. ;)

Yeah, you can put all the €1000's you saved on another car on the market in there! :p

AWD is a Subaru trade mark though. Selling a poverty spec 2WD version is a watering down of the brand imo, similar to what Audi and BMW did a few years ago by offering the A4 & 3 Series with pint size engines and things like manual rear windows, etc just to shift units.

Thankfully Subaru are not looking at mass market volume sales just yet.

At €37k for a Legacy they certainly are not.

They do not want the Legacy to be the victim of its own success by pitching it into the repmobile segment of the market with a paddy spec model, further damaging residuals. But keep it priced at a level that reflects its engineering and also preserves it desirability with its more traditional buyers (unpretentious affluent folk) down the years.

Let the Impreza cater for the more mainstream market, if people really want AWD. Without the lower diesel running costs, they didn't up to now. So keep the Legacy as their more upmarket offering.

where did you get the prices for the legacy? I can't imagine they are that expensive? Is this the diesel you are talking about?

what price is that one down to now?
That was there 6 months ago when I was buying the legacy and they still can't shift it. I think 2 months ago it was at €21k cash.

Its still an awful looking car. The dash is nothing to look at either and the interior was not as good quality as I was expecting comparing it to the legacy.

    Tiny boot aswell

I don't find the boot tiny at all (I guess its all relative to what you are used to).
The interior looks basic but the spec is very good for the price. It may not be the prettiest car on the road, but the TDS gives a subtle body kit, xenons and 17" wheels which certainly help. My insurance was a paltry 360 euro too but it probably reflects my age :P I was in the same boat as you OP, half thinking of the Octavia VRS but went for the Impreza in the end. Absolutely no regrets so far...

Subaru dealer in Puckane North Tipperary. I told him that was seriously overpriced and he remarked they were aiming to compete with Honda.

I then remarked that possibly Subaru want to compete with Honda but I doubt they will be put in the same market(in buyers minds) in Ireland.

He started to remark about for the price it has a better spec than an Audi A4 and other equivalents. I tried to explain that Subaru is not exactly a currently desirable brand in Ireland and I was hoping he would attempt to try to sell me the idea that the 2010 Model is €37k whereby the 2009 model is €26,995. He said "Im not here to explain our pricing structure to you". I said "I thought you were supposed to try to sell me the car". He hung up. Good riddance.

He would get the old model Legacy for under 30k (if any left in stock) but the all new model lists at 35k for the saloon and 37k for the estate.

The Impreza is 28-32k depending on spec. The bargain basement entry level (low 20's) one, doesn't appear to be available anymore.

The VAG ninjas make me laugh.

Please leave Subaru's for those who can appreciate the difference between them and other marques some people put on pedestals.

about the Skoda thing: who'd have thought they'd be the yardstick for everything! Priceless publicity, really !

Of the two options listed by the OP given the current weather conditions with AWD and a good engineering heritage I think I know which one I would choose if lucky enough to be given the option and for sure it wouldnt be the torque steering FWD one

Is it any wonder that dealers are in trouble if they advertise a car at 32k when they're reaslistically willing to accept 21k :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,545 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Subaru dealers aren't in much trouble. they're mostly tiny dealers and they sell more than enough to stay afloat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,837 ✭✭✭air

I accept that, but the general practice of advertising inflated prices isn't exclusive to them.

Is the new Legacy in the dealerships yet? I'll have to pop in for a gander when they arrive.

Aren't they just advertising the actual list price of it?

I doubt there's 11k off the list price for that model. more likely that another spec is available for 21k.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,837 ✭✭✭air

Well Lex above ^ has bought his own car from that dealership (I think) and he says they are willing to sell it for that. To be fair, there's not a huge amount of difference between what was the base spec Impreza (21k or so) and the top end one that's listed at 31k or something, mainly bells and whistles type stuff, the engine / transmission etc is the same.
Also given the colour etc it might be proving hard to shift given that it's been sitting there as long as it has.

Yes, they are quoting the new list price for a top spec car with extras and a 2010 reg.

The photo may be of an '09 but it is more for reference purposes. They may have sold the one pictured or something similar enough during the year for 21k or so or maybe it is their dealership demo vehicle.

Looking more and more like a Lexus, at least in saloon form. I'd take the estate.
