NCT expires 01/01/2010 but cannot get a retest until the 11/01/2010, so that means teh car will not have test for 10 days, the NCT centre says it will be OK to still drive the car during those 10 days.. is this correct and legal to do so?

    Thanks

Once you have the test booked you should be ok. Officially, you are not meant to drive the car if the NCT has expired. However, in this case, there is nothing free until then, so theres not much you can do.

the car failed on the 13th of December on one thing, an inner tie rod end.. it has been a pain trying to find a garage to do the repair and cannot get it done until the 29th December and the NCT centres will be closed until the 11th Jan 2010

correct me if im wrong ..........

but if you dont have a valid NCT cert ,your not insured !

    am i right ?

co,s i heard this over and over again .

when you get insured , you now have to produce a valid NCT cert ,,

so if its out of date & something happens ,,your not insured !

happened to a friend of mine & the insurance wouldent cover him in the bit of a tip he had !!!!!!

it was custmer services at the NCT office that informed me it was legal as I have a re-test booked, they simply told me to carry the fail sheet with me in the car and show the text message from NCT to show the re-test date

It's far more serious if you have a PSV licence i.e. taxi/hackney/limousine. You are allowed test your car up to 3 months before the expiry date of your licence. If you miss that date by even a day, there is a 500 Euros penalty. No valid NCT, no licence, no insurance cover.

I spoke to my insurance company and they said it was fine and that there would not be any problems with the policy :)

ooooops what a tool, I just noticed this was in the "classics" section, it was meant to be in the general "Motoring" section.... (1997 Audi A3 ain't a classic)... :o

Consider yourself corrected ;) ! NCT is not a requirement of any insurance company. Enforcment to the RTA and other legislation is a function of the Garda - no-one else is empowered by anyone to police(sic) same.

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Except in the case of a PSV vehicle where you must have a current licence to operate and the vehicle must have a current NCT to obtain that licence.

Also for older cars, an insurance car may insist on the car having a current NCT before they issue you with a cert. Hibernian Aviva recently stipulated this for my with my '95 Volvo.
