Have just made a poplar lamp stand and was wondering what the best varnish or wax would be?

    Thanks

I wouldnt go with varnish anyway, or laquers or such, they make the item look too plasticy and well.....'varnished'.

For a more natural look go with oils, such as Danish oil, after three or four coats of that it'll be looking swell! The good thing about the oil is that you can rub it on with a cloth and then wipe off the excess, so no brush marks, or none of the bother of setting up spray equipment, clean up etc. Alternatively you could give it a few coatings of shellac, giving it light sandings between coats and then a rub down and polish with clear beeswax to finish her off. I tried the last method recently with a bit of walnut.......you can see your reflection in it!! :D but it doesnt have a plasticy look.
