I've been thinking about possible business ventures lately as i've been made redundant. I was thinking about setting up a community pharmacy in my local village with a population of approx. 650 people. There is a GP and supermarket in the village. i'm not a pharmacist but i'd need to employ a pharmacist and then i'd run the floor etc. My friend is a pharmacist and he offered to help with the legal end/starting up etc. I'm really only sounding people out, it keeps me sane to talk about any possible business venture to be honest as things aren't looking too good at the moment on the job front. I posted my idea in Health and Science and the feedback was generally that it wasn't a good idea at all. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    bad idea
    population size is tiny
    you're not a pharmacist
    set-up cost are massive

Agree! Pharmacy has seen its hay day and is on its way down now. With generic substitution, reference pricing and a new price agreement on the agenda this year you'd need a super great location to even consider the idea and credit just isn't as easy to get as it once was. Plus you'd definitely want to be a pharmacist so you can run the place and not pay what is still a pretty hefty wage to someone else or two of them if you plan on being open more than 40h per week. I'd most definitely look somewhere else.

    Population is way too small.
