    Hi,
I'm getting the new slim PS3 soon I was wondering if I'll be able to play it on the old non-HD TVs. I read on here that the old PS3s did by pressing a button until it made a sound or something like that so I was wondering if that would work of rthe slim ones as well. I'll probably be buying a new HD tv in a few weeks but I wanted to know if I can play it in the meantime.

    Thanks.

Since the wire that carries the video signal to the TV included with the PS3 is not HD then yes, of course you can play on a regularly TV. The wire splits into three which you can either put into an adapter (included with the PS3) and into the SCART or if you have the right connections on the TV the three of them can go directly in, they're colour coded so there's no hassle. The image should come up automatically. If not give us another shout.

Thanks amacachi. So as long as it has the Red, White and Yellow audio- video cables I'm good to go? No press this button until you hear a sound trick?

Not that I know of. I've had two PS3s, the old one and the slim, both worked straightaway on the Standard-Def TV in my room and on the HDTV in the sitting room, though through a standard-Def cable again. Both times I used the SCART adapter though it worked on my standard def TV for a few weeks with the Red White and Yellow cables no bother. I just started using the SCART to make it so it took 2 less presses of the TV remote to get to the PS3 channel. :pac:

Ah Ok. Thanks again for your help amacachi. Much appreciated.

The button press and beep you are thinking of is to reset the display settings, so if you were using it on a HDTV and then moved it to a non-HDTV you might need this to get it to detect the display again. But out of the box it should be fine, it'll detect a non-HDTV and set itself to the right mode.

If your TV supports 480P over component (EDTV), this will look better than regular SDTV so pick up a component cable for it too (IIRC the PS2 ones work fine and are/were pretty cheap).

Thank You very much for that clarification stevenmu.

    Merry Christmas to you both.

Hi. Sorry for bumping this back up after so long. I didn't want to make a thread for this.

Can the slim Ps3's play region 1 Blu-ray DVDs? There are some DVDs I wanted to order from Amazon.com but Amazon.co.uk doesn't have them. I was wondering I would be able to play the Region 1 DVDs or if I should wait for a Region 2 version.

Nope - the PS3 DVD playback ability is region locked. So you won't be able to play region 1 DVDs. Had to hold onto my old DVD player for my old Criterion collection...

On a related note, it is also Region B locked for Blu Rays, but the majority of the releases are not region locked.

Thanks Niska. I kind of had that feeling but I figured it would be good to check before hand.
