I loved asterix as a kid and a random wiki has me reading about it at the moment (I cant believe its still going) so its got me reading about it and I am actually tempted to go and see if I still have most of the books at home somewhere (and I'm 25 now damnit its been 20 years at least since I first read them)

Anywho Aside from the comics there were the films which were my first introduction to bad dubs (I remember this because one of them never bothered to change the really cheesy but catchy theme tune in french which I am looking for on youtube right now) and there were few videos games aswell on the mega drive which I liked.

Anyway my main reason for posting this is that looking back over the wiki article about it I am genuinely shocked at all the crap I missed in my first read through.

I dont mean the nods and winks at french social issues, current affairs (which were historical events by the time I read them) and so on. But simple ones I didnt cop on to almost all the puns in the comic (which is worse because the translation of the puns to english is quite good) but all the villagers were puns aswell and as a young 5 year old I actually never clicked with most of them.

I feel really stupid now. I could blame the irish education system instead maybe for not teaching me what a pun was for quite some time...

Also I could have sworn dogmatix is in all of them, I never noticed he is actually introduced in one and made a full character at the end of it.

But yeah my respect for asterix is extended tonight and expect youtube clips as I find them.

I was Asterix fan. I remember reading one under the desk in school, trying my best not to laugh, failing and getting caught.:D

I loved those books, I had them for years. It often took me a while to get some of the puns in the characters' names, but they were great. Crismus Bonus, Nefarious Purpus, Cacofonix, Getafix...great stuff.

Fantastic books! Still pick them up if I find them about. Think I have only seen one cartoon film and really enjoyed it. Saw a game in an arcade abroad once before but never got a go :(

There's also a theme park over in Paris. A little more difficult to get to (I think! Don't hold me to that) but well worth it - just some fantastic rides and a bit quieter than the overhyped Disney Land :)

In the 70ies a quater page of it use to get published on a daily basis with the Irish times. It was a bigger hit in France with a theme park named after it.

The memories are flowing back. I've a load of the books in a box somewhere and i'm 40 now; got them probably about 30ish years ago. They were in comic strip format. :D

Saw a few of the films too.

Now that it's been brought up I'm gonna head up into the attic to dig them out and re-read for the craic.

Must do a trawl through Amazona and Youtube too

I assume you mean Asterix est la? I like The Look Out Is Out from Asterix in Britain (the Beatlesesque parody version) aswell.

I saw some of them in Forbidden Planet a couple of weeks ago. Need to pick up a few more. Went to the theme park as a kid. It rocked! (Well, apart from when it started lashing down with some huge storm and the restaurants wouldn't let anyone in as it was past lunch time....)

I loved Asterix and Obelisix with a fiery passion and it is what got me interested in history as a young man. Apparantly when the main writer died, his artist took over and completely ruined the stories (He had no mind for satire etc.)
