Land owned by NUI, Galway?

I was just using Google maps and something struck me when I was looking at the map of Galway. The land owned by the University in the city is shaded brown. However, this shaded region appears to extent for miles outside Galway city and around Lough Corrib. Is this correct? Does the University actually own all this land? See Image Below...

No - there could be a number of reasons for the map looking like this, but you can be sure the university doesn't own all (or even any?) of the brown-coloured areas on the map. That brown-coloured area covers thousands of acres of land, mostly bog and mountain, and I'm not sure why Google have coloured it in that way. The title 'National University of Ireland Galway' which appears in the centre of your image is clearly misplaced and, IMO has no relationship to the brown-coloured area upon which it is located. What the brown-coloured area represents remains to be seen - scenic area? Gaeltacht region?

I don't think the label is misplaced as it only appears once on the map and appears to apply to the entire brown-coloured region. The image below might make it clearer. The brown region extends right into Galway city encapsulating the exact area where the main University is built, down as far as the main entrance at the Quad.

Perhaps it is not owned by the University but could it have something to do with zoning and future development of the area?

Hmmm... Looking again, I think it is a big cartographic error... The same brown shading is used for UCD, UCC and UL, but there is no way that NUIG owns (or has any interest in owning) thousands of acres of bog and mountain stretching all the way to the northwest of Keane's Pub at Maam Bridge... Google use green shading to identify National Parks in Ireland, but a very large chunk of Co Limerick is also identified in this way for no obvious reason...

I think the NUIG campus is supposed to be shaded brown, but I don't think any of that shading (or the NUIG label) should extend west of Moycullen... Cartographic error - neither the first not the last...

Yeah, that appears to be the case. I checked UCC as well and the same shading was used but apparently google don't have a legend for their maps? (which I found a bit strange considering that it's one of the most widely used mapping programs, although I understand it could be difficult implementing a general legend which would cover all countries and continents :) )

Anyway, must be an error. It just seemed strange that some regions seem to be intentionally cut out from the shaded region, for example around Dangan.

Defo a mistake on googles part, i know a man who owns a lot of shoreline along the lake up near oldchapel which is marked brown on the map.

NUIG has some campuses out that way, not sure where exactly though. It could be around there, but obviously not quite that big.

NUI Galway does own land up river but it's nothing anywhere close to that much. Google Maps is wrong about things all the time.

NUIG would never could never own that much land. They would have sold it all long ago.

Aye: personally I'd be rather happy if they could manage to show the Corrib!
