DTT on a Toshiba Regza in Cork

First of all, sorry if this is another one of those threads.

I just discovered that my Toshiba Regza 32AV505D can pick up DAB radio stations, which is fantastic plus (and a bit of a doh after having it for a year already). It also seems to pick up Digital tv channels, but displays no video. I have heard mention that Irish DTV is encoded in MPEG4, which isnt the same as the UK standard.

So the question is, do I need some special encoder for the slot in the TV, or is DTV just not running properly in cork yet ? If I do need the card, are they pricey, as I could get Play TV for the PS3 and use it as a DVR apparently.

Are you sure that's not the radio stations on DTT that you are seeing?

Firstly if you're picking up radio stations on a digital TV then you're picking up DTT which I think is receivable in cork.

Secondly, radio stations don't show picture on DTT because they don't use video for radio though I feel they should and show videos, ads and the studios.

Thirdly, Freeview UK digital TVs won't show picture and you can get cam's to pick up the MPEG4 broadcast and convert them into MPEG2 video for ur tv to display.

Its not a good time to buy an IDTV. Its better to wait til Summer or Autumn 2010 because Freeview HD TVs will have MPEG4 and display Irish DTT perfectly. Freeview and Freeview HD are different and not the same. Freeview is just over 10 years old. Freeview HD has just been launched with receivers in final manufacture stage.

Its worth looking around at other posts before posting to avoid asking questions already answered elsewhere. But no harm anyways, we are all lazy be times lol

UK freview from presely-it's radio stations use video and programme display information.

    The RTE ones do not.

By picture I shoud have said, blue screen, EPG and programme info from presely or Satellite (Sky). Not video as in like a TV station. RTÉ shows black screen isn't it, no info at the moment for radio station, but not programmes, I guess too much work at the moment for them lol considering they've just added DAB. I guess enough on their plate. Hopefully they will during January.

I got a playtv for the PS3, works like a charm, far better quality, dispite the fact our reception is pretty naff, analogue suffers from massive amounts of ghosting. I`m quite impressed considering I thought DTV was going to be canned in Ireland due to de recession. I guess we`ll be waiting a while for HD signals then ?

Nah, there's a radiowave spectrum and capacity benefit in terms of electricity consumption and so forth from pressing ahead. Also after 2015 quality of service can't be guaranteed due to neighbouring country signal interference not guaranteed beyond that date. Also only digital TVs being sold mainly now on. The issue with HD is the need for all the RTÉ studios to be kitted out for HD, costs alot of money and takes time. That's part of why RTÉ put in the submission for renovation at Donneybrook is it 2025: http://www.rte.ie/about/project2025/

HD eats spectrum which is probably why we'll have to move to DVB-T2 at some stage.
