iphone purchase in o2 store

Decided I'm going to get the iphone 16gb 3Gs.
Went into the o2 store today and was talking to an assistant about it. He didn't know that much about it (seemed like he was just there for christmas). Basically I told him I wanted the 45 eur package and that I was an existing o2 pay as you go customer.
He said that the phone would cost 129 euro (on 45 euro a month package whereas it's 199 on website) and that they are all out of black iphones and only had white. Then he went off to check with someone else, once I had said I was going to hang on for the black one.

He then came back having checked with someone more senior and cost was actually 199 and low and behold they had several black ones left.
I couldn't buy there and then anyway because I had no ID (for direct debit etc) so my questions are:

Are they willing to go below the 199 price? Can you bargain a bit?
Are there plenty of black ones left?
Will the prices come down after christmas - is it worth waiting til then?
    Thanks

Used to manage and O2 retail store a few years ago.

There is no way they will haggle on any phone, no mind one as popular as the iPhone. They won't price match, they wont throw in a free accessory (unless HO have given them stock especially for that purpose).

Phone stores do not have January sales. But prices of phones drop month on month in o2 and could drop at anytime, having said that, I don't see it dropping. If is was to drop it would be to the €159 / €169 mark, not €129. I'ver seen phones stay the same price from 6 months.

But no one really knows but o2.

Cheers Funky - guess there was no more to it than the guy in the shop not really being very good.
I'll just bite the bullet and sign the next 18 months away to o2....

I signed up for the 45euro a month contract about 4 months ago.

The 16Gb 3GS was just out and was 199euros.

I instead bought the 8Gb 3G version for 99 euros instead of 199euros.

Only difference is the 3GS has a 3mb camera compared to 2Mb on the 3G (QUALITY IS JUST AS GOOD IMO) and can record videos.

The 3G software can be upgraded to 3GS.

And i have barely used any of the 8Gb and yet have taken over 900 photos on the thing.

Well happy with it. It is really more than a phone. I use it for an awful lot more. Facebook, Skysports news etc Theres some really cool apps that u simply dont get with other phones.

When I got mine I was told they only had black ones left. perhaps the assistant got mixed up with which ones they had left.

got to agree there shadow - i defo knew more about the various packages and iphone prices than he did. When he said 129 I kept quiet hoping he wouldn't cop it.....

One other thing - someone mentioned if you come from another network you get it for nothing...is that serious - can you elaborate?

No, it's nothing to do with coming from another network. If you buy an iPhone 3G 8GB (the old stock, basically) or a 3GS 16GB and sign up to the €65 package or higher, the cost of the phone is free.

If you're buying an iPhone and you have a credit card, buy it online. Takes a day or two to get to you, but there's no jumping through hoops, showing ID, etc etc.

When I tried to buy instore they wanted a letter from my employer () in addition to ID and proof of address, so I went online that evening and bought it without any ID.

i see - that's the same as vodafone are doing for there 65 euro a month package....i'd never use that many minutes so not worth it for me....

thought i already posted this, if ya port a number and sign up to advance 350 or 700 the 16gb iphone is free

well to be honest, i hate the monthly bill contracts. Prepay all the way... Specially when toping up is so easy, internet, laser etc...

if i would be you , i would buy a prepay phone and then just take a clear sim. I spend max 20eu on prepay, so getting iphone for 65eu per month is just a waste, and anather bill in the end of the month... got enought of them allready

Getting an iPhone on speakeasy seems very expensive for what you get.

    Speakeasy 16GB 3GS
    iPhone €519
    18 months x €20 credit = €360
    = €879

    Billpay 16GB 3GS
    iPhone €199
    18 months x €45 contract = €810
    = €1009

So at first look the billpay package is €130 more expensive over 18 months. But with the bill pay you get 175 minutes, 100 texts and 1 GB data. €20 credit will only get you about 60 mintues or 150 texts a month. so for an extra €7 a month (€130 difference divided by 18 months) you get a lot more, and these calulations don't take into account the price of data.

You also have less than half the initial outlay for buying the phone.

There's a lot more than just those differences. The 3gs camera also has tap to focus. The 3gs has a much more powerful processor to run applications and games faster, and has a much better graphics processor for intensive games. The 3gs also has a compass, and it's rumoured to have an FM radio which might be activated by upcoming firmware releases. The 3gs also has voice control. In fact, there are a lot more features, I just can't think of them at the moment.

This is pointless - Billpay is always the cheapest way to go (unless you v rarely use the phone, or have no self control).

Why are you comparing €20 call credit (60 mins) with a €45 tariff (170 mins - 150 texts, etc), that not really a fair comparison. This makes no sense.

    Apples and oranges

Because the previous poster suggests it's better to get the speakeasy phone and that he only uses €20 credit a month. I was just pointing out that infact the bill pay offers much better value even if you are a very light phone user.

Not having a go, kind of backing you up, in an odd way admittedly, but thats how I roll!

Would be better though to compare a lower tariff, as this is just wasted money per month and even though it will up the initial price of the phone it will prove better vaule over the 18 months if you are a low end user.

As i said before always go bill, unless you use less than 15 per month in credit, or have a waek disposition for international calling!

    60 minutes for a €20 top-up?dunno where your getting those figures,that's 33c a minute??

you also get unlimited texts on prepay for 20 euro a month so your calcultions are a good bit out,so you just get a few more minutes for the extra money and your committed to paying o2 for the next 18 months, definitely not worth it if you don't have job security and like another poster said just another bill at the end of the month.

So ye you should buy prepay or get one off ebay, should get a good one (3g 16gb) for around 300-350 euro

That is the cheapest iPhone tarrif, well there is one for €40 but that only gives calls and text to o2 so you would end up spending a lot more with that.

and if that's how you back someone up i wouldn't want you fighting in my corner :)

@ --Paul--, i forgot about the unlimited texts with €20 topup. according to o2.ie calls cost 35c per minute, but that could be wrong http://www.o2online.ie/wps/wcm/connect/O2/Home/Shop/Plans/Price+plans/Speak+easy+prepay/O2+Experience+Plus

Vodafone are selling the iphone from feb. Its a fact they will undercut O2. better to wait before buying for o2.

exacltly, paying o2 for 18 monts is balls... specially when i use only 20 or even less sometimes. The cheapest contract you can take is 45eu aswell...

Knowing that this is mine property now, helps alot aswell, i can sell it if i whant withouth any problems.

And i will repeat, its an extra bill in the end of the month, and when you toping it up during the weak, you dont feel it so badly!
