Because of a listings error in the Christmas edition of the RTÉ Guide where UTV's listings were under the TV 3 logo. TV 3 are crying it was deliberate while RTÉ say it was a genuine mistake by an outside source who handles the listings for them....

Is there a difference between UTV and TV3?

I thought TV3 was just a deflected UTV for those they bothered to broadcast to. [They have no in fill transmitters, and none in Donegal; they hardly make any real programmes, other than talking heads].

A bit like Percy French being sued by the West Claire Railway - it will be laughed out of court - if it ever gets to that.

Was an easy mistake for them to make in fairness. :)

TV3 should put the money that will be wasted on their court case into original programming.

I can't find Christmas RTE Guide in any of the shops around here including Tesco's in Lisburn. Are they in short supply for some reason?

According to newspaper reports, TV3's proposed settlement terms were that RTÉ recall all copies of the Christmas RTÉ Guide (the biggest selling edition of the year and probably a huge chunk of RTÉ Commercial Enterprise's profits), and that RTÉ run promos on RTÉ One and RTÉ Radio 1 for TV3's drama premiere tonight, "Belonging to Laura" as well as promos advertising TV3's schedule on St Stephen's Day.

As far as I can see this is extermely excessive for the error that occoured - the swapping of UTV and TV3's St Stephens Day schedules. The TV3 schedule WAS printed - it is labelled "UTV" and that of UTV labelled "TV3". Any reader of the Guide would know that the schedule featuring "ITV News" was UTV's and that featuring "TV3 News" was TV3's. I think RTÉ should fight it in court - even if TV3 won I can't see a judge giving huge damages in the case. It might even be cheaper than recalling and reprinting an entire run of the Christmas RTÉ Guide.

I don't see UTV going to court over it, incidently...they were as equally wronged as TV3...

It can't do them any harm to make a fuss out of this as it gives them extra publicity and it is implying that RTE are playing unfairly.

This has to be a joke. Looking at the schedule for the period in question, from 17:45 till 05:15 the next day, TV3 do not have a single programme they have orignated. Not one. The first 3 hours 15 mins of that time are programmes that originate from ITV, programmes that are also broadcast by UTV, but not all at the same time. From 12:25 pm till midnight, there is a 5 min news headlines from TV3, and a 45 min GAA archive special. Some schedule. They should thank RTE for hiding it and giving UTV the blame for such uninspiring tat. UTV are equaly bad, they do not have a single programme all day, ITV news is not their's, but there is an interactive 'Brain Box' game that looks suspiciously like a premium rate rip off.

If this goes to court, it would be adding to the gaiety of the nation - much more that Tiger's ill fated drive to the water hazard the other week.:D

The request was excessive. Belonging to Laura was listed correctly so whould have been unaffected by the error. anyway, it was crap.

it's also hypocracy on the part of TV3 demanding that they broadcast messages on RTE channels about the error when there are 16 BCC decisions relating to Play TV which TV3 have yet to broadcast.

Those TV guides that totally ignore the morning programmes especially from 6am - 1pm and just puts in
    6am Morning programmes
    1pm News etc . . .

That really annoys me. Such lazy publishing. RTE Guide don't do this - but those guides that come with papers on Sat and Sundays do.

Im surprised they even copped it

RTE should outsource it to a company who produce stronger covers for the RTE guides. Our one has ripped off already.

Have TV3 actually issued proceedings against RTE? And what possible grounds could they have, and what losses have they suffered? Surely, all they would do is draw attention to their limp Christmas schedule of rebroadcast content of bought-in programmes from the same source as UTV. What difference could such a mistaken listing make, people would realise the mistake once they pick up the remote. Did they sue the Irish Times when the had the whole schedule repeated from the week before? What do they do when there is a change to the listings? This has to be a publicity attempt by a very poor broadcaster that has run out of ideas, and of decent programmes. They do not even broadcast in 14:9 from their own studios, and use poor quality equipement, judging by the soft focus they broadcast, and use very low production values. They extensively use 'kids with cameras' who jump the zoom in and out, and swing the single hand held camcorder around to catch every detail, and then put this out without edit. "What's this button do, dad?" Kids!

They seem to be very quick to sue the opposition, or at least, they are reperted to be, but no cases seem to come to court. I wonder why?

RTÉ should counter sue them for not reviewing EastEnders or Fair City on Ireland AM. Surely this is a very important monetary issue for RTÉ as this small mistake in the RTÉ Guide.

Ironically St. Stephen's day on TV3 is quite different to the usual ITV stuff. Okay so its repeat ITV stuff but still it happens to be a different schedule.

    TV3 prime time

Stars on the Street, X-Factor, as UTV, Evan Almighty

    UTV Prime time

Harry Hill, You've been framed, as TV3, All Star Family Fortune, All Star impression show, ITV News, Christmas Tales.

Not as far as we know, it is at solicitor's letter stage but AFAIK proceedings have not actually been instituted. I notice RTÉ Online had a "clarification" of the TV3 and UTV listings yesterday so maybe they have settled for that. Printing errors happen in magazines all the time, it is an accepted fact of the publishing industry and while the day it happened might have been unfortunate I don't think it is grounds for TV3 to take a High Court action. As the old phrase goes "errors and ommissions expected".

And hopefully it would be thrown out for wasting court time.

Maybe they will start a new reality TV show out of it, where they get 12 viewers to sit as a jury, and see if they can tell the difference between the two schedules.

The winner gets a box set of 12 months of Xposed. :D
